Glorious Goodwood Day Two: Tuesday Tips and Best Bets

Good ground across the Downs, eight races on the card, and the Goodwood Cup headlining the afternoon. This is proper racing, the kind that sorts horses out. There is depth across every division today, from a monstrous 24-runner sprint handicap to a Goodwood Cup that looks like a two-horse race on paper. Let’s cut through the noise.

1:50 โ€” Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap Stakes (1m2f, 18 runners)

Eighteen runners, five places paid at 1/5 odds, and a genuinely open heat. This is exactly the kind of race where the market can be manipulated by big names, and the right angle is finding the horse with solid form, a firing yard, and a price the public has underestimated.

Diego El Queso is the pick at 9/2 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. Colin Keane rides, and his Goodwood numbers are sharp: 21% strike rate from 14 rides here with an A/E of 1.13. That is not a lucky streak, that is a jockey who knows this track. The horse was runner-up last time out, has the trip and going already ticked off, and trainer G M Lyons has sent out four winners from 29 runners over the last fortnight. The form sequence of 83-212 is the work of a horse building toward something. At 9/2 in a handicap of this size, that is fair value for a win, and the five-place terms make each-way sensible.

Yabher at 8/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) is the main danger. William Haggas has a 19% course strike rate and five winners from 28 runners in the past 14 days. Yabher has won three of his last five but the form is feast or famine, and that inconsistency is a concern in a competitive handicap field.

Selection: Diego El Queso Each-Way โ€” 9/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred. Five places at 1/5 odds.

2:25 โ€” Coral Vintage Stakes (Group 2, 7f, 6 runners)

A tight Group 2 for juveniles, and the two market principals are both worth serious attention. William Buick on Al Hudaiba is the obvious play: Charlie Appleby’s 22% Goodwood strike rate is the strongest of any trainer on this card, and Buick posts an 18% course record with an A/E of 1.04. The colt has won three of his last four, the only blemish being an unseated rider which tells you nothing about ability.

The value angle, though, is Haffner at 15/8 with LiveScore Bet. Ryan Moore partners him for Aidan O’Brien, and a win and a second from two starts on today’s trip and going suggests there is clear upside from limited experience. Both runners top the market for good reason, but Haffner’s price is marginally better value given the unknown ceiling. Al Hudaiba is 2/1 elsewhere, and the market is essentially splitting them evenly.

Small field, odds-on territory possible, no each-way play needed here.

Selection: Haffner โ€” 15/8, LiveScore Bet. Ryan Moore, O’Brien yard, form reading well.

3:00 โ€” HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2, 7f, 8 runners)

Lake Forest tops the figures for this race and the 11/8 with Boyle Sports and Betfred reflects that, though 5/4 is available with LiveScore Bet. Cieren Fallon rides, and his Goodwood course numbers are the best of any jockey on this card: 19% strike rate, A/E of 1.28. William Haggas has five winners from 28 runners over the past fortnight. Lake Forest has a win and a second in his last five starts, handles today’s trip and going, and the 38-day break is not a concern for a yard in this kind of form.

Qirat at 3/1 is the danger. Ralph Beckett has nine winners from 42 runners recently, and Colin Keane brings his strong Goodwood profile to the ride. The form includes a recent win, though the inconsistency either side tempers the case.

Selection: Lake Forest โ€” 5/4, LiveScore Bet (others: 11/8 Boyle Sports, 11/8 Betfred).

3:35 โ€” Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1, 2m, 8 runners)

This is the race of the day and the most straightforward one to call. Trawlerman tops the figures, has four wins from his last five starts with only a second breaking the sequence, and William Buick gets the ride for John and Thady Gosden. The Gosden yard has eight winners from 15 runners in the past fortnight, which is an exceptional 14-day hit rate. Buick’s Goodwood record speaks for itself.

The challenge comes from Scandinavia, who arrives unbeaten in five straight for Aidan O’Brien with Ryan Moore aboard. Five consecutive wins is a remarkable sequence, and this is a genuine clash of champions. Evens for Scandinavia versus 15/8 for Trawlerman tells you the market leans slightly toward the O’Brien runner.

Trawlerman’s experience at Goodwood, the Gosden yard firing, and Buick’s course figures tip the scales. This is a short-price race but there is no value in the opposition at these odds.

Selection: Trawlerman โ€” 15/8, Boyle Sports/Betfred/LiveScore Bet.

4:10 โ€” Coral Rewards Shaker Handicap Stakes (5f, 24 runners)

Twenty-four runners over five furlongs. This is a lottery with a logic puzzle buried inside it. The place terms of five places at 1/5 odds are generous enough that each-way is almost mandatory for any selection in a field this size.

Adrestia Each-Way is the pick at 15/2 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. Oisin Murphy takes the ride, his 16% Goodwood strike rate and 82 winners at the course making him the safest hands in a chaotic race. The filly’s figure is well clear of her official handicap mark, the trip and going are ticked off, and she returns quickly after just 17 days, which means fitness is not a question. Without a win in five is a mild negative, but this is a big field where the each-way terms do the heavy lifting.

Run Boy Run at 8/1 (Boyle Sports, LiveScore Bet) merits a mention: strong figures, handicap mark looks manageable, and Richard Spencer has two winners from 12 runners recently. But Murphy and the filly’s handicap edge are the call here.

Selection: Adrestia Each-Way โ€” 15/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred. Five places at 1/5 odds.

4:45 โ€” British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (6f, 16 runners)

Juvenile maiden with plenty of unknowns. Final Objective at 7/2 (Boyle Sports/Betfred) is the market leader and has form to back it up with a second and a seventh from two starts. Callum Rodriguez partners him for Hamad Al Jehani. The price is fair rather than generous for a maiden, and the opposition includes several unexposed runners.

Dorigo at 7/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred/LiveScore Bet) showed a second on debut before a seventh, and Kevin Ryan’s runners at Goodwood are capable of outrunning the market when fresh. At twice the price of the favourite, there is each-way appeal in a 16-runner field.

Selection: Final Objective โ€” 7/2, Boyle Sports/Betfred. Best-value favourite in the maiden.

5:20 โ€” Bolney English Wine Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (1m, 15 runners)

Annastarzy is the standout here, despite drifting out to the 7/2 available with Boyle Sports and 3/1 with LiveScore Bet. Three consecutive wins is a compelling record, Richard Hannon has seven winners from 55 runners in the past fortnight, and the trip and going are both already proven. She ran eighth and fourth before this streak, which is the one note of caution, but horses do improve sharply and three on the bounce is not a fluke.

Rumba Numba at 4/1 with LiveScore Bet is the main threat: Roger Varian has six winners from 17 runners recently, and the form includes two wins. But coming back from 41 days off into a competitive fillies’ handicap is a tougher ask than Hannon’s in-form runner returning on a short break.

Selection: Annastarzy Each-Way โ€” 3/1, LiveScore Bet (others: 7/2 Boyle Sports, 7/2 Betfred). Four places at 1/5 odds.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksTrawlerman โ€” Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (3:35, Goodwood)
Odds: 15/8 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 15/8 Betfred, 15/8 LiveScore Bet)

Trawlerman tops the race figures, has won four of his last five starts at the highest level, and gets William Buick in the saddle for a Gosden yard that has been operating at a remarkable eight winners from 15 runners over the past fortnight. The Goodwood Cup is his race: two miles on good ground, a stiff test that exposes pretenders, and a horse who does not know how to run badly. Scandinavia’s unbeaten run is real, but Trawlerman’s class, experience and the combination of Buick and an in-form Gosden operation make this the most confident call on the card at the price.
