Gowran Park, Wednesday 8 April 2026 — Soft Ground Tips
A soft surface at Gowran Park today, which is your first filter for every race on the card. The ground will catch out horses who haven't handled cut before and reward those with form in testing conditions. Three races have been selected for coverage, with one each-way angle in the big filly handicap well worth exploring at a generous price.
1:30 — Irish Stallion Farms EBF Race (7f, Soft)
On paper, Neolithic is the obvious call at 6/5 and you can see why. A 28/1 shot splitting horses rated 109 and 112 in the Gladness Stakes at the Curragh eleven days ago is strong form by any measure, and Aidan O'Brien's yard is ticking along at 2/17 in the last 14 days, which is functional if not flying. Wayne Lordan rides and the horse has a legitimate claim.
The issue is the price. At 6/5, you need everything to go right. The more interesting angle is Controlled at 3/1 with Bet365. Shane Foley picks up the ride for Danny Murphy, whose recent 1/7 stat from 14 days is not spectacular, but Controlled's last run tells you plenty. He was beaten a head by a Ballydoyle-trained rival in the Madrid Handicap at Naas on his debut for this yard, with an RPR of 107 backing up the form line. He previously won a 5f maiden at Naas for Aidan O'Brien, so a step up to 7f wasn't foreign to him, and the Naas result proved he handles the distance. Soft ground at Gowran over seven furlongs suits a horse who travels comfortably and stays, which Controlled demonstrably does. The 3/1 offers real appeal in a four-runner field where the favourite is a short price under pressure to confirm Curragh form.
Selection: Controlled (Shane Foley) — 3/1 Bet365
2:05 — Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Maiden (7f, Soft)
Fourteen runners make this competitive, but the form map narrows it down. Bobby McGee is the each-way play at 7/2 with Bet365, though the angle worth considering harder is Hassaniya Each-Way at 11/2 with Boyle Sports or 7Bet.
Noel Meade's yard is genuinely firing at 4/20 in the last 14 days, which is a strong trainer stat for any Irish handler at this level. Bobby McGee was close-up in a 6f Curragh maiden on good ground and has since been gelded. The ground question is the flag: that best effort came on good, and today is soft. He can handle it, but it's not proven, which is why 7/2 might be fair rather than generous.
Hassaniya's profile is more intriguing. Michael O'Callaghan sends this one over, a yard running at 1/7 recently, and the colt's last run at the Curragh over a mile, where he was leading before weakening late, suggests the mile was too far. Back to 7f should see him in a better light. Crucially, the Spotlight confirms this ground is fine for him, the third from his Curragh run has already won since to boost the form, and the wide draw is the only concern. At 11/2 each-way in a 14-runner maiden with four places paid at 1/5 odds, this represents genuine value if he's anywhere near the selection for today.
Selection: Hassaniya (Jamie Powell) — 11/2 Boyle Sports / 7Bet
4:25 — Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap (1m, Soft)
Seventeen runners, five places at 1/5 odds, and a field full of lightly-raced fillies returning from a winter break. This is a race made for each-way punting.
The standout each-way selection is Angelight Each-Way at 10/1 with Unibet or Spreadex. Joseph Patrick O'Brien saddles three runners here, and when a yard does that, you look for which one is likely to carry the money. Angelight's form reads /4321 coming into this, which is a horse who improved consistently through last season before winning a Dundalk maiden over a mile last November. Crucially, she had previously run well on turf and at this specific track before that Dundalk win, so today's conditions are not a step into the unknown. Declan McDonogh rides, the most experienced of the jockeys across O'Brien's three entries. The wide draw is mentioned in the Spotlight, but in a 17-runner fillies handicap on soft ground at Gowran, five places are paid, and a horse with Angelight's profile at 10/1 is exactly the type BonusDevil readers should be backing each-way.
The other O'Brien runner worth watching is Greydreambeliever at 8/1 with William Hill. She has soft-ground form and ran well multiple times up to 7f, so stretching to a mile is the question. The market will tell you something before the off.
Selection: Angelight (Declan McDonogh) — 10/1 Unibet
Today's NAP
Odds: 11/2 — Boyle Sports (others: 11/2 7Bet, 7.2 Betfair Exchange)
The form from his Curragh mile run reads better now the third has won since, and dropping back to 7f should unlock more of his ability after he was stopping late over the longer trip. Michael O'Callaghan's yard is ticking at 1/7 in the last 14 days, the soft ground is confirmed as suitable, and 11/2 in a maiden where the market leaders carry questions over the going is a legitimate each-way price. Soft, form boosted, right trip, right yard.
