Gowran Park, Wednesday 20 May: Tips and Best Bets

A seven-race card at Gowran on good to yielding ground, and there are a handful of races worth getting stuck into. The going is near-ideal for horses who want a bit of cut underfoot without it being a slog, and that plays into the hands of some interesting profiles across the card. Three races stand out as worth covering in depth.

Selection: Sparan Nua (15/8, Betfred / Boyle Sports)

Jim Bolger runners who win on debut at 25/1 do not do so by accident. The trainer’s post-race comments that she had been “showing plenty at home” are exactly the kind of signal that separates a fluke from a proper prospect. Sparan Nua won a 1m maiden at Naas just 11 days ago, beating the once-raced favourite in what the spotlight rates as a performance with real upside. Declan McDonogh takes the ride, and Bolger does not send these lightly.

The concern is that Bolger’s yard is running at 1/9 over the last 14 days, which is a cold stat. But the horse’s own form profile is the compelling part here. A 97 RPR on debut is a serious number, the step up in company is manageable, and good to yielding ground is unlikely to inconvenience a filly who quickened on debut. Lady Mairen has the rating advantage and a willing trainer in Pat Twomey (6/14), but 6/5 for a mare who missed her entire three-year-old campaign and has one win from six starts asks too much from the market.

Sparan Nua at 15/8 is the play. Early-season Bolger fillies with this kind of home reputation frequently improve rapidly at this stage of the season.

Selection: Fleur De Provence (Evens, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

Dermot Weld’s yard is cold at 0/9 over the last 14 days, which is the obvious caveat here. But Fleur De Provence’s debut form is too good to ignore in this grade. She went to Naas in late March as a 16/1 shot, ran green, and still finished second over this exact trip on soft ground, with Sanctijude back in fourth that day. The pedigree screams a mile and beyond: half-sister to Group-placed Eternal Silence and Chiara Luna, out of a Group 2 winner over a mile and a half. She is bred to improve with every run and the form line through Sanctijude ties the field together neatly in her favour.

Sanctijude lines up again here at 10/3 and represents a known quantity, but 0 from 9 lifetime tells its own story. Bofa Beach has proper ability on her Curragh debut form but disappeared in the Goffs Million and has questions to answer. Nellcote is the main danger: a JP O’Brien yard firing at 12/66 is respectable volume, DBM rides, and the pedigree is sharp. But on form, Fleur De Provence deserves her favouritism. Evens in a nine-runner maiden is not generous, but with only three places on offer, win-only is the play here.

6:20 โ€” INPBA Sponsored Gate June 1st Maiden (1m)

Selection: Big Cypress Each-Way (11/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

Dylan Browne McMonagle takes the mount on stablemate Chamonix for JP O’Brien, which is the obvious market signal. But Declan McDonogh retaining the ride on Big Cypress is the more interesting angle. McDonogh does not stick with O’Brien horses out of charity, and when the retained jockey takes one runner and a top pilot keeps the other, both have their reasons.

Big Cypress is a Dubawi half-brother to two Listed winners at RPRs of 117 and 116. The pedigree is very much a mile-and-beyond profile, and that is exactly what Gowran is offering today. His return run at Limerick last month showed clear improvement, staying on into fourth from well off the pace while hanging right, suggesting both that he needed the run and that there is a more organised performance waiting. Good to yielding suits, the step up to a mile is a plus, and 11/4 in a 15-runner field is worth covering each-way (three places at 1/5 odds).

Chamonix at 2/1 is the market leader and McMonagle’s pick, which carries weight. But in a big field at fair odds, Big Cypress is the value angle.

Today’s NAP

Sparan Nua โ€” @gowranpark1 On X Fillies Race (7:20, Gowran Park)
Odds: 15/8 โ€” Boyle Sports / Betfred (others: 7/4 LiveScore Bet)

A Bolger debutant who won at 25/1 with the trainer flagging serious home work is not a horse you oppose lightly at 15/8. The 97 RPR on debut is a strong number, good to yielding is no issue, and Declan McDonogh takes the ride. Lady Mairen is shorter in the market but her record and a missed three-year-old campaign make her price hard to justify. Sparan Nua is the class act in this field and the angle is straightforward.
