A decent eight-race card at Gowran Park with light rain keeping the ground honest at Good. The feature is the €107,800 Gowran Classic, a 20-runner heat that effectively doubles as a Derby trial prep for some and a serious stepping stone for others. With the Epsom Derby now just five days away, connections with Classic ambitions will be watching very closely. Three races deserve serious attention from a betting perspective.

1:29 — Today’s Gate Fillies Maiden (1m, Good)

This 11-runner maiden is straightforward on paper. Elusive Echo (5/4 Boyle Sports, 11/8 Betfred) heads the market and the evidence supports it. A Sea The Stars filly out of a half-sister to The Fugue, she was first of seven in a barrier trial at Naas last week, and that kind of prep is taken seriously by the Joseph O’Brien stable. The tongue tie is noted and worth watching as a potential indicator that connections want her focused from the outset. Barrier trial form is not always reliable but finishing first in one speaks to basic ability and racecourse temperament.

The main threat is Black Chicken at 7/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred), a Sottsass filly with a pedigree pointing at this sort of trip and beyond. She finished fourth behind Elusive Echo in that same barrier trial at Naas, so the form ties in neatly. At the price there is value in each-way terms but it is hard to look past the market leader when the trial evidence is this clear.

3:09 — Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap (1m1½f, Good)

Eight runners and a competitive little fillies’ handicap with a few live angles. Thrifty Of Digby Each-Way (7/2 all books) is the selection. The Jessica Harrington yard has returned 3 wins from 30 runners in the past fortnight, which is respectable, and Shane Foley takes the ride. More importantly, the form reads well: she has won over 1m at this exact venue before, returned to form at Roscommon a fortnight ago making all over an extended 7f, and steps up to a trip that is comfortably within her range. The 5lb penalty for that win does not look harsh given the class of the race she landed.

Ob La Di at 13/2 (Boyle Sports, 6/1 LiveScore Bet) merits a mention. Won over an extended 1m2f at Naas on good ground last August, her last two runs came on ground that was softer than she wants, and that Leopardstown fourth when 1 and 3/4 lengths clear of Akecheta tells you she is coming back to something like her best. The J P Murtagh yard has an above-average 18% course strike rate at Gowran, which is a genuine positive.

Spanish Temptress at 7/1 is worth a line in the notebook. Three handicap wins last season, nose second at Limerick in April, and that Curragh horror show at 7/2 truly was too bad to be true. If the market has forgiven it, she could outrun her price easily.

3:44 — Irish Stallion Farms EBF Gowran Classic, Smullen Series (1m1½f, Good, €107,800)

Twenty runners and the day’s centrepiece. Joseph O’Brien saddles four, which is a formidable squad in any race, and the stable has first and third in the betting covered. The question is which one to back.

Hardy Warrior is the official flag-bearer at 9/4 (Boyle Sports), confirmed by the Spotlight as heading the stable challenge. The form is strong: second behind Derby candidate Benvenuto Cellini at the Curragh last August in the Futurity, fourth in a Group 1 at Saint-Cloud, won a conditions race at Naas on return. The slight concern is the third in the Prix Noailles, where he did not see out an extended 1m2f at Longchamp. Today’s 1m1½f is comfortably shorter than that and should suit. Good ground is fine.

Perisher at 5/2 (Betfred, LiveScore Bet) has won his last two, including over this course and distance. He is 11lb higher but the Spotlight notes he is 16lb below stablemate Hardy Warrior on official figures. Backing the same yard’s stable lad at shorter odds than the lead horse makes little appeal here.

Summer Is Tomorrow at 11/2 (Boyle Sports/Betfred) is third best of the O’Brien squad on figures but ran in a very small field on return and has scope. At the price he is fair each-way cover if you are in the mood for spreading.

The selection is Hardy Warrior at 9/4 Boyle Sports. He has the class, the course/distance conditions suit, and his connections have targeted this race as his key prep. Bunyola Bay at 28/1 has winning form and a progressive profile but is up in class sharply and has limited Irish track experience.
