Hamilton Sunday Tips: May 17, 2026

Hamilton puts on a competitive seven-race card under good ground conditions, and there is genuine value to be found across the three featured races. The going is straightforward turf on a track that rewards horses who travel well and stay on, and trainer form is a key factor today with William Haggas running red-hot at 13/47 over the last fortnight. Here are the selections worth backing.

4:45 Sky Bet Extra Places Handicap (1m5f)

Savrola Each-Way (12/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the each-way play in this 12-runner mile-and-five. Jason Hart takes the ride on this front-running seven-year-old who was progressive throughout last summer, finishing first or second in all five starts over staying trips. He ran over 1m5f at Hamilton specifically, which counts for a lot on this track. The concern is a 178-day break, but he handled a similarly long layoff last season and won first time out. Dianne Sayer’s yard is quiet in recent 14-day numbers but this horse does not need the yard to be firing. At a double-figure price with four places on offer at 1/5 odds in a 12-runner field, the each-way case is compelling.

Ride The Thunder (5/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is Roger Varian’s each-way alternative at a more realistic price for those who want to keep it simple. He came from the back at Haydock last time and essentially replicated Valiancy’s run without quite the same result. Gelded since and hooded first time, those stable switches often unlock improvement. He looks a serious contender at 5/2 and is likely shorter come post time.

Ghaiyya (7/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is worth noting too. Charlie Johnston’s filly won three times over 1m4f last summer and bolted up on reappearance at Doncaster three weeks ago. She is up 5lb and this is a tougher heat, but good to firm form translating onto good ground is not an issue. Each-way at 7/1 with four places is workable if you want cover.

5:15 Sky Bet Build A Bet Handicap (5f)

Jordan Electrics (4/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the one to side with. Nine course wins from 22 starts at Hamilton is a record that speaks for itself, and his course-and-distance figures of 3-7 are elite for a handicapper. Jim Goldie’s yard has been ticking over reasonably at 4/34 in the last 14 days, and Paul Mulrennan knows this horse and this track. The legitimate question is whether a 10-year-old still has the toe for five furlongs off this mark, given his best recent form has come over seven. The answer is that his Hamilton record gives him a significant course edge over the rest of the field, and 4/1 reflects the risk fairly. If he retains any zip over the minimum trip, this track suits him like no other.

Station X (8/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the value alternative in a wide-open 15-runner sprint. Connor Beasley rides for Bryan Smart and the form is solid, winning on the all-weather before this return to turf. His two-year-old turf wins came on soft and heavy, so the midweek rain will have been welcome even if the ground has dried to good. At 8/1 in a big field over five furlongs, he qualifies as a genuine each-way play at the price, though the field size just about keeps him in each-way territory.

5:45 Sky Bet Price Boosts Fillies’ Handicap (1m1f)

Plaid (15/8, Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet) is the selection and has the credentials to go close on her first run for a while. James Fanshawe sends her up from a 21-2 record that shows steady improvement with every start. She landed a Kempton novice in December and returned from a break with a neck second there in March, nudged up just 1lb for that near-miss. In a small eight-runner field, the market respects her at 15/8 and rightly so. Good ground is no concern given her Kempton form on a flat surface, and Saffie Osborne has been riding with confidence.

Dunkeld Dreamer (9/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the one to oppose the favourite with. Karl Burke’s filly won at Haydock in April and then ran a good fourth on a sharper track at Beverley 13 days ago. She is unchanged in the weights and represents a live market alternative at a price that offers some value against the favourite. The step up from 7.5f back to 1m1f could actually suit her better.

Seren Star (5/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred) for William Haggas and Tom Marquand is the other serious threat. Three wins around a mile in 2025 and a yard firing at 13/47 over 14 days is a dangerous combination. She is however 5/2 in an eight-runner field, which means she needs to win to pay. Back her to win only if you are taking her seriously.

Today’s NAP

Plaid โ€” Sky Bet Price Boosts Fillies’ Handicap (5:45, Hamilton)
Odds: 15/8 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 13/8 Betfred, 15/8 LiveScore Bet)

Three runs, three improved efforts, and now stepping out for James Fanshawe on good ground with just a 1lb rise to overcome. Her neck second at Kempton in March showed she retained all her ability from the winter break, and this is a manageable eight-runner handicap rather than a lottery. The Haggas runner will attract money but Plaid is the horse the form points to most clearly, and 15/8 is a fair price for what looks a well-above-average 3yo filly in a race she can dominate.
