Hamilton, Wednesday 27 May: Tips and Best Bets
Hamilton Park serves up a seven-race card on good to firm ground under partly sunny skies. The stiff uphill finish here rewards horses with genuine gears and a willing attitude, and the track punishes anything that blows up in the straight. With the Epsom Derby just ten days away and the summer Flat season gathering momentum, the yards that matter are starting to fire. Kevin Ryan (20% course strike rate, A/E 1.13) and Hugo Palmer (22%, A/E 1.03) are the two names to watch throughout the day, and Joey Haynes rides here at a remarkable 21% win rate with an A/E of 1.62, meaning he consistently beats the market at this track.
2:05 โ Wyvis Roofing EBF Maiden Stakes (5f, Good To Firm)
Selection: Sale Shark (9/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred)
Hugo Palmer’s newcomer is the one to side with here. The yard runs at 22% at Hamilton and the 14-day stats show three winners from 22 runners, suggesting they are in good form. Sale Shark cost 52,000 euros as a yearling and his pedigree is seriously eye-catching: closely related to Ekhtiyaar (Group-placed, RPR 116) and New Providence (Group 3 winner, RPR 110), both of whom showed their best as two-year-olds over this kind of trip. Palmer’s juveniles are noted as going well right now, and the good to firm ground will suit a sharp, precocious type bred for speed. The stable does not send a horse like this to Hamilton with Palmer’s course record behind it without expecting a bold show.
Or Another at 9/4 is the clear market rival from the Karl Burke yard, and the form of that Pontefract debut reads well, but Sale Shark’s bloodline profile gives him the edge on a track where Palmer consistently delivers. Jaijai at 5/2 is interesting for Hannon but looked short of pace at 6f on good ground at Ascot and dropping to 5f here is not obviously the fix.
2:35 โ One Stop Roofing Supplies Ltd Restricted Novice Stakes (1m1f, Good To Firm)
Selection: Bearish (8/13, Boyle Sports / Betfred)
Ed Dunlop is a 19% trainer at this track and has gone five from 17 in the last 14 days, which is a strong recent stat. Bearish did not need to reproduce his promising debut form to beat Pepsea at Thirsk last month, and now meets that rival again 7lb worse off. The weight reversal tightens things up, but Bearish is the one who has demonstrated the ability to quicken under pressure. His form ties into Newmarket last year when the expectation was high, and he delivered at Thirsk without having to be brilliant. Good to firm suits him, the mile and a furlong trip is his optimum distance, and Jason Hart is in good hands on this course. Bearish remains the one to beat.
Pepsea at 3/1 is not without claims, especially with 7lb back in hand, but the reversal of form requires a tangible step forward that is not guaranteed. The rest of the field are on their debut or returning from long absences with raw form figures.
3:05 โ ICB (Water Proofing) Handicap (6f, Good To Firm)
Selection: Watchdog Each-Way (3/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)
Richard Fahey’s three-year-old has been in relentless form, winning back-to-back 6f turf handicaps at Redcar and Doncaster before this step up into Class 4. He ended 2025 with a pair of all-weather wins and has transferred that confidence seamlessly onto turf, making all on both occasions. Oisin Orr takes the ride and the good to firm ground is exactly what he has been thriving on. Yes, he is 5lb higher and now faces a Class 4 field for the first time, but his profile is that of a progressive type who has not yet hit his ceiling. Fahey runs at a healthy 8/63 from the last 14 days and knows how to target these races.
Siouxpersonic at 9/4 is a legitimate threat after her close second at Ripon, but she is 3lb higher and Julie Camacho’s yard has gone just one from 20 recently. Tricky Tel at 5/2 is interesting back at 6f following a decent Chester return, but Hugo Palmer’s recent 14-day stats (three from 22) do not suggest they are at full tilt, and the question of whether he performs away from Chester is real. Watchdog at 3/1 represents the value in an eight-runner handicap where the each-way terms (three places at 1/5) give you solid insurance on a horse who has been doing everything right.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 3/1 โ Boyle Sports (others: 3/1 Betfred, 3/1 LiveScore Bet)
Back-to-back wins at Redcar and Doncaster over this exact trip on good to firm ground make Watchdog the standout selection on the card. Fahey’s yard is in form, the Class 4 step up is manageable for a horse still on the upgrade, and the 3/1 is fair value in a race where the market has not fully priced in how well he has been travelling. The each-way terms cover any worst-case scenario, but this one can win outright.
