Hamilton, Saturday 1 August 2026: Tips & Analysis

A seven-race card at Hamilton on good ground, and three races stand out as genuinely punchable. The Lanarkshire track rewards horses who handle a sharp, undulating layout, and good ground here plays fairly through the card. Roger Varian fires at 39% at this venue and has a runner tonight, Edward Bethell lands 26% of his Hamilton starters, and Kaiya Fraser’s course record at 20% wins and an A/E of 1.52 marks her out as a jockey who genuinely thrives here. Worth bearing all three in mind as you read through.

7:30 โ€” Cube Glass ‘soba’ Handicap Stakes (5f, Good, 14 runners)

A wide-open five-furlong handicap with 14 runners and plenty of legitimate threats. Top weight Corolla Point is the market leader and the form reads well: two wins and three places from his last five starts, with experience of today’s trip and going. P J McDonald takes the ride and Edward Bethell’s yard lands 26% of its Hamilton runners, but Bethell is only 2/25 in the last fortnight, which tempers enthusiasm. The 140 lb burden from stall 11 is a genuine concern in a big-field sprint.

The each-way angle that appeals most is Jordan Electrics Each-Way at 7/1 with Boyle Sports. The ten-year-old was a winner last time out, handles this trip and going, and Paul Mulrennan has been in good form. Yes, Jim Goldie’s yard is quiet at 2/37 over the past two weeks, but this horse clearly arrived here in form and gets into the race on a lenient weight of 129 lb. Four places are paid at 1/5 odds, making the each-way case straightforward at 7/1 in a field this size.

Fluorescence Each-Way at 10/1 (Boyle Sports / Betfred) is the longer-priced interest. Edward Bethell runs her over a trip and going she clearly handles, and back-to-back fourths show she stays competitive at this level without quite getting her head in front. The unseated rider blot on her card can be dismissed as a racing incident. At double-figure odds in a race paying four places, there is genuine each-way value here.

Selection: Jordan Electrics each-way (7/1, Boyle Sports). Saver: Fluorescence each-way (10/1).

6:25 โ€” Strathmore Hotels Ltd Novice Stakes (1m3f, Good, 5 runners)

A small-field novice over a mile and three furlongs, and on paper this looks like a match between two horses: According To Mark at 5/4 and Kissmehoneyhoney at 6/4.

According To Mark is the selection. Three consecutive seconds tell you a horse is knocking on the door, and a drop back from a winner to a novice contest looks like connections have found the right spot. P J McDonald takes the ride for Edward Bethell, a trainer who strikes at 26% at Hamilton. The 5/4 on offer at Boyle Sports and Betfred is a fair reflection of the form, but it represents value given the course record of the yard and the consistency of the horse’s recent runs. A horse that has placed in three on the bounce at this level is overdue a win, and this looks the race to deliver it.

Kissmehoneyhoney for William Haggas is respected: the Newmarket yard is 32% at Hamilton and Haggas is in solid form at 8/43 over the past fortnight. But a card reading 1-8 needs more unpacking than the data gives us, and at 6/4 you are taking a short price about an unexposed profile. According To Mark’s consistency earns the nod.

Selection: According To Mark (5/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred).

5:50 โ€” Scullion Law EBF Maiden Stakes (6f, Good, 5 runners)

The standout race of the evening from a tipping perspective. This is where Roger Varian’s phenomenal Hamilton record of 39% wins comes into play directly. California School is trained by Varian, ridden by Paul Mulrennan, and Varian is red-hot at the moment with a strike rate of 10/24 over the past fortnight. That is not a cold yard sending a runner up the M74 on a Saturday evening.

The colt finished sixth on debut, which is a perfectly respectable introduction for a two-year-old who will have learned from the experience. Six furlongs on good ground at Hamilton suits, and at 5/4 across Boyle Sports and Betfred, the Varian angle makes this a solid favourite to back. The market has it right.

Henley On Thames at 11/8 (Boyle Sports / Betfred) has three runs under his belt, two seconds and a sixth, and Kevin Philippart De Foy’s yard is striking at 2/9 in the past fortnight. He represents the main danger and the market basically has these two locked in a match. California School’s trainer edge and current yard form gets the verdict, but only narrowly.

Selection: California School (5/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred).

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksCalifornia School โ€” Scullion Law EBF Maiden Stakes (5:50, Hamilton)
Odds: 5/4 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 5/4 Betfred, 5/4 LiveScore Bet)

Roger Varian runs at Hamilton at a 39% strike rate, and his yard is firing at 10/24 over the past fortnight. California School is a well-bred debutant improver stepping up from a perfectly respectable first run, handled by Paul Mulrennan who knows this track well. Five runners, good ground, the right trainer, the right jockey, and a yard in form: all the boxes are ticked. Take the 5/4 and move on.
