Haydock Park, Thursday 21 May 2026

Soft ground and light rain at Haydock sets the scene for a Thursday card that rewards those who know which horses genuinely relish cut. Three races have been selected for closer inspection, and the going angle runs through every pick today. There is genuine value on the board if you know where to look.

2:30 โ€” Pitch Perfect EBF Maiden Stakes (1m3ยฝf, Soft)

Selection: Scarlet Legend (Rob Hornby, Andrew Balding)

Best price: 4/6 Boyle Sports / Betfred

The form angle here could not be cleaner. Scarlet Legend is a brother to Goodwood Cup winner Quickthorn, bred for staying distances on an easy surface, and he went agonisingly close on debut at Salisbury last time, beaten a short head at 10/1 by the odds-on favourite. That was on good to firm, and the soft ground today opens up a serious question about Balding’s string. The yard is running at a healthy 10/71 in the last 14 days, which tells you this stable is firing in a big way right now. Rob Hornby takes the ride, the extra yardage at Haydock suits a horse bred for a Cup winner’s family, and he has every right to go one better second time out.

Outback Legend is the main threat at 7/2. Two consistent efforts at Nottingham and Chester, and the step up in trip could help him. Moonrunner has shown steady improvement on the all-weather but has plenty more to find against this class of rival. Scarlet Legend wins a fair bit of this at even money, frankly.

3:00 โ€” Unsung Heroes Fillies’ Novice Stakes (7f, Soft)

Selection: Borjina (Kevin Stott, Edward Bethell)

Best price: 4/1 Boyle Sports / Betfred

Bethell’s yard has not been at its most prolific in the last fortnight on paper, but Borjina herself has a compelling case. She improved markedly from her debut fourth to win by two lengths at Catterick last month, going odds-on in the process. That win came on good ground, but the 7f trip is clearly her trip and her debut fourth at Newcastle on the all-weather showed she handles varying conditions. The key angle is that she arrives at Haydock fit, improving, and off a penalty that is easily justified given the winning distance.

Secret Of Life is the 13/8 favourite and carries a 7lb penalty from a debut win at Wolverhampton last August. A long absence for a Ralph Beckett filly is rarely cause for panic, and she is clearly talented, but that layoff adds genuine uncertainty. Shushu from the Varian yard debuts with strong breeding and respect is due at 6/1. Pointe Bleu disappointed on her Newmarket debut, beaten 12 lengths, and needs substantial improvement to matter here. Borjina at 4/1 is the value play against a favourite who has been off the track since August.

5:13 โ€” First In, Last To Leave Handicap (5f, Soft)

Selection: Trilby Each-Way (P J McDonald, Sam England)

Best price: 6/4 Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet

This is the bet of the race. Trilby is a three-time winner at Haydock and has form at the track ranging from good to heavy, so today’s soft ground is absolutely no concern whatsoever. Sam England’s yard has been in cracking form, striking at a 4/20 rate across the last 14 days, which is a strong number for any yard at this level. McDonald keeps the ride, the first-time cheekpieces are a clear signal that connections are going for it today, and his most recent run at Beverley was a near-miss, beaten less than two lengths in sixth when the form suggests he is close to a winning mark.

Wheels Of Fire won at Musselburgh on soft last month and arrives here in form, and the 13/8 from Boyle Sports is a fair enough price. Brummell looked laboured over 6f on reappearance and this drop back to 5f helps, but Julie Camacho’s yard is quiet at 0/14 in the past fortnight and that tells a story. Isle Of Lismore is an interesting 11/1 each-way shout on slow ground, returning from a long break, but the ten-race losing run needs respect. Trilby, with his course form and in-form yard, looks the horse to beat in a wide open little sprint.

Today’s NAP

Scarlet Legend โ€” Pitch Perfect EBF Maiden Stakes (2:30, Haydock)
Odds: 4/6 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 4/6 Betfred, 8/11 LiveScore Bet)

Brother to a Group 2 Cup winner, a near-miss on debut against a well-fancied rival on good to firm ground, and now stepping up in trip on soft at Haydock. Andrew Balding’s yard is running at a fine strike rate over the past fortnight and Rob Hornby is not wasted on a no-hoper. This is a horse with every credential to win a maiden like this and the 4/6 is a fair price given the level of evidence already on the table. Confident NAP.
