Haydock Park, 22 May 2026: Soft Ground Value on a Grey Friday

Haydock has drawn a compact but quality card for a Friday, with the Listed Cecil Frail the standout race on soft ground that will separate the pretenders from those who genuinely handle cut. The going is the story of the day: every selection needs to be comfortable in the conditions, and there are horses across this card who most certainly are not. Here is where the value lies.

1:45 โ€” Newsells Park Stud Fillies’ Novice Stakes (1m2f, Soft)

Charlie Appleby fields two here and the debutante Tribal Queen at 2/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) gets enormous hype on pedigree alone, but 2/1 about an unraced filly on soft ground is not a price that excites. The smarter play is to side with her stablemate Fashion’s Fancy at 9/4 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) if she shortens further, though there is an interesting case elsewhere.

Ladykirk (Silvestre De Sousa, Jane Chapple-Hyam) at 7/2 (Boyle Sports) is a horse with an Irish Oaks entry, and that detail alone tells you the yard believes she stays and has a future at the top level. She shaped well on debut at Yarmouth on ground described as good to soft, which is not far removed from today’s conditions, and the step back to softer going should not inconvenience her. The Sandown run last month looked a stiff ask in a hot novice and an 8-length fifth does not tell the full story. Chapple-Hyam’s yard is a considered operation and they do not enter horses in Classic trials without substance.

My selection: Fashion’s Fancy (Billy Loughnane). Appleby is 4/14 in the last 14 days, the yard is firing, and a horse beaten five lengths by an odds-on stablemate at Kempton over a longer trip on the all-weather has plenty of upside switching to turf on soft ground. The pedigree is classy and Billy Loughnane is the right booking. If Tribal Queen is the stronger market mover, respect it, but Fashion’s Fancy at 9/4 has the better profile for today.

2:20 โ€” Oakmere Homes EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (6f, Soft, 12 runners)

A 12-runner 2yo fillies’ maiden full of interesting newcomers and a useful form horse in Jazz Queen. Kevin Ryan has two debutantes here and his stable is in decent shape at 6/36 over the past fortnight. Minzelle (Clifford Lee, K R Burke) at 3/1 (Boyle Sports, 5/2 LiveScore Bet) commands serious attention. Closely related to Turn On The Jets, who won at five furlongs as a 2yo with an RPR of 112, and to Saratoga Special, a 5f Listed winner, the pedigree screams early speed and Kevin Burke’s yard has made a strong start with 2yos this season.

Libertango (Billy Loughnane, George Boughey) at 4/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) is the other runner worth stressing. The price tag at the breeze-ups was 400,000 guineas and Boughey is 5/14 (36%) with his 2yos at Haydock. That course-trainer stat for juveniles is exceptional. A No Nay Never filly out of a family packed with speed, and on soft ground that should bring out the best in a sharp early type.

Jazz Queen sets the form standard but she was only second at Chester last time and faces a wall of unexposed talent. Esha’a at 5/1 for Owen Burrows is a genuine each-way player given the trainer’s last two 2yo runners at Haydock have both won.

My selection: Libertango. Boughey’s juvenile record at this track is a stat that demands respect, the purchase price suggests a yard that believes they have something, and 4/1 on the morning line looks workable.

2:55 โ€” British Stallion Studs EBF Cecil Frail Stakes, Listed (6f, Soft)

This is the race of the day and the going is the decisive factor. The market is led by Rosy Affair at 7/4 and Sky Majesty at 5/2, and both have solid claims, but neither is a bet at those prices when you can find value elsewhere in a 17-runner Listed race.

Rosy Affair’s Group 3 win at Deauville came on soft and she clearly handles it, but 7/4 in a 17-runner field on this sort of ground is a short price for a race where anything can happen. Sky Majesty is versatile on ground but her Newmarket return was underwhelming.

The bet in this race is Rhyme Dust Each-Way (Hector Crouch, Ralph Beckett) at 18/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Beckett has been in strong form with 9 winners from 41 runners over the last 14 days, a strike rate that puts the yard firmly in the firing zone. Rhyme Dust’s Newmarket run last time was written off by the Spotlight itself, with the note that “more than just not handling the track was amiss” suggesting a physical issue that has since been addressed. The key line is her Ayr run last September, when she improved sharply on soft ground in a 5.5f Listed race to finish third. She is a lightly raced 4yo, the soft Haydock conditions suit her profile, and Beckett placing her here with the yard in form at 18/1 is simply too big to ignore each-way in a 17-runner Listed race paying three places.

Magic Basma (Tom Eaves, Kevin Ryan) at 8/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) is the other each-way play. She has run well in Listed company before, Ryan’s yard is ticking along at 6/36, and the fourth at Newmarket three weeks ago on good to firm ground was a reasonable seasonal reappearance. Soft Haydock over six furlongs could unlock more.

Today’s NAP

Rhyme Dust โ€” Cecil Frail Stakes (2:55, Haydock)
Odds: 18/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 18/1 Betfred, 14/1 LiveScore Bet)

Ralph Beckett is operating at a strong 9/41 strike rate over the past fortnight and has clearly placed this lightly raced 4yo with purpose. Her Newmarket return was excused by the Spotlight itself as more than just a track issue, and her Ayr Listed run on soft ground last September showed the form she is capable of when conditions suit. Soft Haydock over six furlongs ticks every box, and 18/1 in a 17-runner race against market leaders who are anything but certainties represents genuine each-way value.
