A warm Saturday card at Haydock on good ground, with three featured races worth your attention. The Group 3 Rose of Lancaster is the headline act, but the Listed Dick Hern and the London Mile Series qualifier handicap offer their own angles. William Haggas and Ed Walker are among the trainers firing well at this track right now, and the jockey stats point firmly towards Jack Mitchell and Callum Rodriguez for course value at a price.

With Danger Bay a non-runner, this race has lost some depth, and Sallaal at 8/13 is the obvious jolly. The form reads well enough: winner last time, winner two starts back, consistent recent profile. But 8/13 for a five-runner Group 3 is a price that demands near-perfection, and there is a question mark over how he translates his current form to this level.

The smarter play is Nahraan with Oisin Murphy in the saddle. Murphy is a 19% winner at Haydock from 263 rides with a positive A/E of 0.98, and John and Thady Gosden are operating at 24% here over the long term with an A/E of 1.08. Those are two of the more reliable course statistics on the card. Nahraan won three of his last five starts, was third two runs ago at this level, and has the trip and going ticked off. The ninth on his last run is the obvious flag, but Group horses regularly run below their best when off the bridle in a race that doesn’t suit. At 5/2 against a heavily odds-on favourite in a small field, the relative value is clear. If Sallaal is anything less than his best, Nahraan picks up the pieces.

This is an 11-runner Listed fillies contest and the market has already told the story. Fallen Angel is a warm favourite and the form backs it up: three wins from her last five starts including back-to-back victories before her last run, in which she finished fourth after an absence. The 86-day gap here is the only genuine query, but K.R. Burke has been ticking along at 7/43 over the past fortnight and James Doyle knows his way around Haydock.

The danger at a price is Alobayyah Each-Way at 9/2 with Boyle Sports. William Haggas is the standout trainer at this course, 25% strike rate from 608 runners with an A/E of 1.1, and he has been firing at 10/52 over the past fortnight. Tom Marquand takes the ride, another solid course performer. Alobayyah won last time out and handles today’s conditions, so at 9/2 in a three-place market she is worth covering each-way as the most likely one to split the market if the favourite runs flat off the break.

Fourteen runners, good ground, a mile, and a field full of horses with mixed recent form. This is the kind of race where the handicapper’s assessments matter more than headline win streaks.

The angle here is Yorkshire at 8/1 with Callum Rodriguez up. Rodriguez is an 18% winner at Haydock from 142 rides with an A/E of 1.11, the second-best positive figure of any jockey in the course data. Edward Bethell is running at 19% and an A/E of 1.11 at this venue, so the trainer-jockey combination on their home patch is as strong a course angle as you’ll find on the card today. Yorkshire was placed last time out, handles today’s trip and going, and rates 8lb above his official mark on the figures. The winless run in recent starts is noted, but he has clearly been knocking on the door and the handicapper hasn’t been quick to punish him for it. At 8/1 with four places available, this is a strong each-way call.

In the win market, Arctic Thunder at 15/2 is worth a mention. Ed Walker is another top-10 Haydock trainer (19% wins, A/E 1.12), and Arctic Thunder won last time out with Kieran Shoemark aboard. The consistency questions are real, but the booking, the trainer form, and the going tick the boxes.
