Hereford, Tuesday 5th May 2026: Good Ground, Six Races, Value to Find
Hereford stages a six-race card on good ground and there are angles worth getting stuck into across the card. Jamie Snowden's yard is firing at 3/8 over the last fortnight, and his runners appear in two of the three races covered below. Good ground suits several of the more interesting profiles here, and while this is not a championship card, there is genuine betting interest if you know where to look.
6:12 โ Safer Gambling At CopyBet Maiden Hurdle (2m, Good, 8 runners)
Machete Beach (3/10, Bet365) is the obvious market leader and the price reflects that. Jamie Snowden's five-year-old carries an RPR of 92 with Gavin Sheehan in the saddle, and the Snowden yard is the hottest in this field right now. The yard's 3/8 strike rate over the last 14 days demands respect. He finished third on debut over hurdles, which gives him a clear fitness and experience edge over most of these, and good ground should suit. At 3/10, there is no betting case, but this looks a likely winner.
The each-way play in the race is Whatcombe Each-Way (13/2, William Hill). An RPR of 97 is the highest figure in the field, the flat form is decent, and Faye Bramley's yard has hit 1/8 in the recent window. The 40 form figures show he has placed before and the 13/2 into a place at 1/5 odds with only eight runners deserves consideration as a saver behind the jolly. The Craftymaster at 15/2 with Bet365 is the other live outsider. Nine AW wins is a serious CV, the distance profile fits, and Tony Carroll's record here is respectable even if the wider 14-day stats are modest. He gives Machete Beach something to think about if the jump to hurdles clicks.
Selection: Machete Beach (win only at 3/10). Saver: Whatcombe each-way at 13/2.
5:42 โ CopyBet Supporting UK Racing Handicap Chase (3m1f, Good, 6 runners)
This is the race of the day. Four horses with genuine claims, good ground suiting several of them, and a course-and-distance angle that could be decisive.
Maximum Offers (2/1, Bet365) is the selection. Snowden's seven-year-old won over this exact course and distance last month on good ground, beating the only other finisher by 35 lengths. He goes up just 2lb for that. Yes, there were only two finishers, but a C&D win on matching ground with Gavin Sheehan back aboard cannot be dismissed. The yard is running hot and this horse is still learning his trade over fences, which means further progression is genuinely plausible. 2/1 is not a generous price for a six-runner field, but the profile is solid.
Mahler Moon at 4/1 (Bet365) is the biggest danger. Fergal O'Brien has gone 5/27 in the last fortnight, the form line shows two wins this spring on good ground, and he was raised only 2lb after a Wincanton win at this sort of trip. He absolutely belongs in this race. The concern is that Maximum Offers holds a big C&D advantage and the head-to-head looks close.
Edgewell Each-Way at 6/1 (Bet365 or William Hill) is worth a small each-way interest. He is 2/2 over course and distance on good ground this spring. Nick Scholfield's recent form is cold, and Fontwell last time was below par, but the Hereford record is the key stat. If he bounces back, this trip and track are his comfort zone. At 6/1 into two places at 1/4 odds, the each-way return is attractive.
Selection: Maximum Offers to win, Edgewell each-way.
6:47 โ CopyBet Overnight BOG Handicap Hurdle (3m1ยฝf, Good, 7 runners)
The Long Walk has been ruled out, which tightens this up. Double Click at 6/4 (Bet365 or William Hill) is the market leader and the Snowden angle applies again. The eight-year-old has an RPR of 126, the highest in the field, and returned to winning form last time out. The form line of 4P431-1 shows a horse that can be inconsistent but is currently in a decent vein. Snowden at 3/8 over 14 days is the form stable on this card, and this trip on good ground looks within Double Click's comfort zone. The price is short, but the profile is stronger than the alternatives.
Earth King Each-Way at 9/2 (Bet365) is the value play in the race. He is back on his winning handicap mark, his latest run at Taunton over 3m on good ground was described as encouraging despite finishing fourth in a stronger Class 3, and Neil Mulholland's runners often improve for the step back in grade. At 9/2 into three places at 1/5 odds, the each-way case is strong for a horse who should be competitive at this level. This is the most interesting price on the card.
I Spy A Diva at 3/1 (Bet365) is the third force. Kim Bailey's mare was a four-time hurdle winner in her pomp and is arguably weighted to win on her old mark. The 124-day absence is a concern, and the recent form since returning has been patchy, but if she has come back to herself this spring, she must be respected.
Selection: Double Click to win, Earth King each-way.
Today's NAP
Odds: 2/1 โ Bet365 (others: 19/10 7Bet, 3.35 Betfair Exchange)
Won over this course and distance last month on identical good ground, is up only 2lb, and returns to the scene with Gavin Sheehan back in the saddle. Jamie Snowden's yard is the standout operation on this card, striking at 3/8 in the last fortnight. With further improvement likely from a horse still relatively unexposed over fences, this is the most convincing profile of the day.
