Hexham Tips: Saturday 6 June 2026

Hexham on a good summer Saturday is exactly the type of card where staying sharp pays off. Three races, a tight field in each, and some genuine form angles to work with. The track suits prominent racers who stay well, and the good ground today opens the door for horses that might have been inconvenienced by the soft conditions that dominated spring. Nicky Richards continues to be the dominant training force here, and Danny McMenamin knows every blade of grass on this course. Keep both in mind throughout.

Nine runners, three miles, and a race where course-and-distance form matters enormously. The Spotlight rightly points to No Regrets winning this race off topweight back in 2023, and he doubled down with an immaculate round of jumping to win over C&D on his latest start. The concern is a 5lb hike from that latest mark and the fact Nicky Richards’ yard has gone 0/5 in the last 14 days. That cold spell gives slight pause.

The horse I want onside is Sir Carnegie at 11/4 with Boyle Sports, Betfred and LiveScore Bet. Mickey Bowen has been in seriously good form, going 6/23 over the past fortnight, and that 30% course strike rate with an A/E of 1.28 tells you he places his horses here with purpose. Sir Carnegie dug deep to win at Perth just over three weeks ago, and crucially did so on the back of a race the previous day at the same meeting. That suggests a horse with a real engine and a relaxed constitution. The 4lb rise is offset by Shane Fenelon’s 5lb claim, so the net effect is actually a pound in his favour compared to Perth. At 2m4f last time, the step up to 3m is the question, but his pedigree and the way he stays on suggest it will be answered positively.

Selection: Sir Carnegie, 11/4 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)

Each-way interest also falls on Lights Are Green Each-Way at 5/1. He won over C&D back in May 2023, beating No Regrets by a neck, and his recent third at Cartmel at 20/1 suggests the yard has him ticking over again. He’s back off the same mark as that C&D win and Jonathon Bewley knows him well. In a race paying three places at 1/5, he’s worth a small each-way interest at the price.

Six runners go forward after the non-runner, and the market is dominated by Two Auld Pals at 15/8. His 23-length demolition over C&D four weeks ago was visually impressive, but that was on soft ground and today is good. He’s also 9lb higher in the weights now, moving into a Class 4. Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore have a 17% course strike rate but an A/E of just 0.79, suggesting the market regularly over-prices their runners here. Pass at 15/8.

The angle I want is Well Educated at 4/1. Four wins at this track across distances from 2m to 2m4f, he returned from a 204-day absence to finish second over this course and distance last time. He’s now 15lb below his last winning mark at Kelso and the course record speaks for itself. George Bewley has gone 1/5 in the last two weeks, so the yard is ticking. A second run back, familiar track, good ground he handles, and a mark that looks generous. Danny McMenamin rides the shorter-priced Freddy Robinson, which is the one fly in the ointment, but Well Educated’s C&D form is simply better than anything else in this field.

Selection: Well Educated, 4/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)

7:13 โ€” Tricia Hughes Memorial Handicap Hurdle (2m7ยฝf)

The most open race on the card, and the one with the most live form contenders. Ebselysees at 3/1 has won back-to-back at Perth and the 7lb rise is effectively cancelled by Rebekah Duffy’s 7lb claim returning to the saddle. Susan Corbett won this race last year and has two horses entered, which shows confidence. But 3/1 in a seven-runner field isn’t crying out for a bet.

The value selection is Abbey Scope at 10/3 with Nicky Richards and Danny McMenamin, a combination that carries real weight at Hexham. Richards hits 23% at this track over a large sample, and McMenamin sits at 15% course wins with a positive A/E of 1.09. Abbey Scope won at Kelso over 2m5f on good ground just 31 days ago, hitting the line strongly, and the form was franked when the third-placed horse won at Southwell. The step up to 2m7f is actually flagged as ideal on pedigree, he’s progressive after only three hurdles starts, and a 6lb rise looks manageable for a horse who won with something in hand. This is a horse who is still on the way up.

Selection: Abbey Scope, 10/3 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)

Odds: 10/3 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 10/3 Betfred, 10/3 LiveScore Bet)

Three hurdles starts and already two wins, with the Kelso victory coming on good ground and the form franked since. The step up to 2m7f is flagged as ideal on pedigree, Nicky Richards fires at 23% at Hexham over a huge sample, and Danny McMenamin is a booking that demands respect at this track. A 6lb rise for a horse who won with something in hand at Kelso represents fair treatment from the handicapper, and this is a progressive young hurdler that looks tailor-made for this race.
