Lucas Glover’s Assault on TPC Deere Run: Halfway Report

Lucas Glover has seized complete control at the John Deere Classic after a stunning opening round at TPC Deere Run. The Georgia native fired a 63 to sit at 14-under par, two clear of Lee Hodges and a commanding four shots ahead of third-placed Zac Blair. This is a leaderboard built on conviction, not luck. Glover’s opening salvo sets the tone for a tournament wide open from third place downwards, but also raises the bar for everyone chasing.

Our Pre-Tournament Pick

Xander Schauffele does not appear on the current leaderboard and looks to have missed the cut. That’s a tough blow after backing him pre-event. Schauffele’s absence leaves a significant hole in our portfolio and signals that form, even for elite players, cannot be taken for granted on a course playing this aggressively short. We’ll reassess heading into next week’s event.

Who’s in Contention

Lucas Glover is the obvious headline. At 14-under, he’s the outright favourite at 2.75/1 with bet365. His 63 speaks volumes: he’s attack-minded, comfortable with the greens, and has built a buffer that would require a collapse to surrender.

Lee Hodges sits second at 12-under and trades at 7/1. Five shots down after one round is recoverable, but Hodges will need another sizzling performance to close the gap. His round of 64 is solid but doesn’t match Glover’s intensity.

Zac Blair and the chasing pack (Ryo Hisatsune, Jackson Suber, Ben Kohles) are bunched at 10-11 under, all priced between 10/1 and 12/1. This cluster offers value, but each will need Glover to falter. Four players tied at 10-under suggests the course is gettable: someone from this group could break through if the leader stumbles.

Round 2 Betting Angles

Back the chasing pack for a shootout. Glover’s lead, while healthy, isn’t insurmountable over 54 holes. Lee Hodges and Zac Blair are priced generously at 7/1 and 12/1 respectively if you believe TPC Deere Run will continue to produce low scores. The field shot enough quality rounds in R1 to suggest this course rewards aggression.

Watch for regression or momentum. Jackson Suber’s 68 for a 10-under position is unusual: his opening round didn’t match the intensity of others around him, yet he’s still very much in the fight. If he tightens up in R2, he has room to gain. Conversely, some of the R1 scorecards will be tough to repeat. The 12/1 prices on Kohles and Blair may shorten quickly if the weather holds and the course remains soft.

Glover’s vulnerability. Leading after one round is a long way from winning. Pressure mounts differently when you’re in the spotlight. At 2.75/1, backing Glover as tournament winner reflects his position, but the margin is thin enough that opportunistic layers might target him specifically in R2 if he posts anything north of par.

Our Updated Pick

Lee Hodges
Odds: 7/1 – bet365

Hodges opened with a 64 and trails by just two shots. At 7/1, the value is compelling. Glover’s 14-under position is elite, but Hodges has shown the scoring potential to match him if the conditions hold. Two rounds remain, and the lead is eminently chaseable. He combines a strong opening performance with decent odds in a competitive field.
