Kempton (AW), Monday 6 April 2026

A compact Monday card at Kempton on Standard To Slow Polytrack. Three featured races worth your attention, headlined by the Listed Magnolia Stakes at 2:55. The going description is important here: Standard To Slow suits horses that travel through their races rather than quickening sharply, so stamina and rhythm matter more than raw acceleration. Keep that in mind across the card.

2:55 Virgin Bet Magnolia Stakes (Listed, 1m2f)

Selection: Gethin (Callum Rodriguez) at 6/4 Bet365 / Coral

This is not a wide-open Listed race. Gethin stands out clearly on form, profile, and pedigree angle combined. Owen Burrows has him ready to roll after a winter break, and the trainer is 1/2 in the last 14 days, which is a small but active sample suggesting the yard is in business. Gethin ended last season with back-to-back Listed placings, at Saint-Cloud over 1m4f on very soft ground and at Newmarket over this trip on good to soft. Both were creditable efforts at the highest level he has faced. He handles cut in the ground, and Standard To Slow on Polytrack is a natural fit for a horse that stays well and races with purpose.

The pedigree link to Global Giant is more than a footnote. Global Giant won this precise race in 2021. Same connections, same race, same track. His handler knows exactly what is required here.

Plage De Havre is nine months absent and the spotlight openly questions whether 1m2f is short enough for him now. Thunder Run has to prove himself on the AW after a Cambridgeshire flop. Devil's Advocate is an interesting price at 11/4 Bet365 and could run a solid race, but the Gosden yard is 2/8 in the last 14 days, which is not a strike rate to go chasing. Gethin is the clear pick at a price that still represents fair value in a seven-runner field.

3:30 Virgin Bet Handicap (1m4f)

Selection: Marnier (Robert Havlin) at 4/1 William Hill

Handicap debut horses from the Gosden yard on the AW demand respect, particularly when the Spotlights note a "good visual impression" on their most recent start. Marnier did exactly that when he cruised past two rivals at Lingfield in November. Yes, the Gosden yard is only 2/8 in the last 14 days overall, but Havlin keeps the ride, and this horse has been held back for something like this rather than thrown into deep water as a three-year-old.

The form at Yarmouth last May still reads well. The rival he beat there is now off a mark of 101. Marnier enters off a mark of 102, and on handicap debut there is always the suspicion that the assessor has not seen the full picture yet.

Bahadur is genuinely respected. Three wins from five, progressive, and the S Woods yard is 10/41 all-time with Doyle aboard according to the data even if the recent 14-day sample is quiet. He is up 3lb again and stepping down in trip slightly. Topteam is another with a solid case and the Balding yard's AW form this season is excellent (7/42 in 14 days is a tidy number for a large operation). But the each-way market in a nine-runner handicap is only three places, and Marnier's unexposed profile at 4/1 on handicap debut looks the sharpest angle in the race.

4:05 Virgin Bet Fillies' Handicap (6f, London Sprint Series Qualifier)

Selection: Fleetwater Each-Way (Taylor Fisher) at 5/1 Bet365 / William Hill / Coral

Seven runners, three places, and a filly who has been in consistent form this spring. Fleetwater ran second at Southwell over 6f on Tapeta last month and followed that with a sixth of eleven in a 0-95 contest over this course and distance just nine days ago. That Kempton run is the key. She was not disgraced in stronger company, and she drops into a fillies-only heat now where her recent fitness and course form give her a clear edge over several rivals who are reappearing after breaks of several months.

Lady Roxby is the favourite and not without claims, but the trainer is only 2/13 in the last fortnight. Musical Angel is intriguing on market watch after a stable switch to Simon Dow, but she arrives after 190 days off and her best form came on turf. Lady Mariko has never raced over six furlongs and is unplaced in all seven AW starts. Those are meaningful flags when you are trying to split the field.

Fleetwater is the one with recent course form and a confirmed AW profile. At 5/1 in a seven-runner sprint, the each-way play with three places at 1/5 makes clear sense.

Today's NAP

Gethin โ€” Virgin Bet Magnolia Stakes (2:55 Kempton)
Odds: 6/4 โ€” Bet365 (others: 6/4 Coral, 2.7 Betfair Exchange)

Two Listed placings at the end of last season, a trainer who sent Global Giant to win this same race in 2021, and a horse that handles soft conditions which translate directly to Standard To Slow Polytrack. Owen Burrows is active and placing runners well over the last fortnight. The field is weak enough at the top end that Gethin's consistent form makes him a worthy NAP at a price that is not prohibitive. Back him for a win.
