Kempton (AW) Tips: Wednesday 5 August 2026

A midweek evening card at Kempton on standard to slow ground, and while the card is heavy on two-year-old novice action, there are some sharp angles to work with. Roger Varian is running at a blistering 11/29 strike rate over the last 14 days, and the Gosden yard (6/30) are in decent form too. Colin Keane at this track is frankly absurd at a 41% strike rate and an A/E of 1.57, so anything he rides deserves a second look regardless of the market.

Standard to slow on the all-weather suits horses with a bit of class and the ability to grind through the surface. Flashy types who need fast ground tend to find it out here.

Selection: Off The Peg at 9/2 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet)

This is a tricky opener with several debutants and a handful of horses showing only modest early form. Chymbulak at 11/8 is the market leader from the Varian yard, which is firing at 21% at Kempton and has posted 11 winners in 29 starts over the last fortnight. That is a serious yard in serious form and Chymbulak has to be respected.

But the each-way play here is Off The Peg at 9/2. Richard Hughes has three winners from 27 starts in the last 14 days and Off The Peg ran a respectable sixth on debut, which means this runner has seen a racecourse and should improve significantly for that experience. Against a field littered with first-timers, that racecourse education is a meaningful edge at 7f on this surface. Oisin Murphy rides the favourite Ahmadi, and Murphy’s 18% strike rate at Kempton is solid, but at 5/2 Ahmadi is completely unexposed and the price is too short for a debutant.

Take the 9/2 about Off The Peg and keep a small saver on Chymbulak if the Varian runner shortens further in the ring.

6:20 — EBF Novice Stakes Div II (7f, 2yo)

Selection: Ghost Raider at 2/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet)

This division looks considerably cleaner. Ghost Raider from Ralph Beckett’s yard at 2/1 is the pick. Beckett wins at 18% at Kempton with an A/E of 0.99, meaning his runners run almost exactly to their market position, and his yard has sent out five winners from 49 starts in the last 14 days.

The key angle here is Rossa Ryan in the saddle. Ryan has been in sharp form and Beckett regularly targets these Kempton novice contests with horses ready to run well first time. Ghost Raider is a debutant, but Beckett’s operation rarely pitches juveniles into a race like this without genuine confidence in the morning work at home.

Gold Army Each-Way at 8/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) also catches the eye. Lewis Edmunds has a 15% strike rate at Kempton but an A/E of 1.38, which tells you he is riding above expectations at this track. Harry Charlton has gone 3/13 in the last 14 days. At 8/1 in a nine-runner field, Gold Army is worth a small each-way interest at 3 places, 1/5 odds.

7:20 — Becky Burke Memorial Novice Stakes Div I (1m3f, 4yo+/3yo)

Selection: Dialstone at 5/6 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) or 4/5 (LiveScore Bet)

This is the most interesting race of the night and the one where the form is clearest. Dialstone from Ralph Beckett is a 5/6 shot but the price is fair rather than generous given the evidence. A runner-up on debut, Dialstone showed enough that day to suggest this step up to 1m3f on a standard to slow surface suits a horse who clearly stays and grinds.

Beckett at 18% at Kempton, Rossa Ryan up, and a horse that has already shown his hand on a racecourse. In a 12-runner novice field full of complete unknowns and complete no-hopers at 200/1, this is as close to a reliable banker as you will find on a midweek card.

Purple Moon at 7/1 (Betfred, LiveScore Bet) Each-Way is worth a small each-way on the back of the 01 form line. George Baker has sent out four winners from 17 starts in the last fortnight and a horse that has already won (the 1 on the form) is clearly capable of performing. At 7/1 in a 12-runner field, the each-way terms at 3 places, 1/5 odds make this attractive as a saver if Dialstone disappoints.

Colin Keane on Centrum at 18/1 (Betfred, LiveScore Bet) is interesting purely for the jockey angle given Keane’s 41% win rate at Kempton, but the Gosden yard is at 6/30 in recent form and the 89 form figures do not inspire enough confidence to go beyond a token interest.
