Kempton (AW) Tips: Wednesday 12 August 2026
A midweek evening card at Kempton under the lights, with Standard to Slow going on the Polytrack. Three races stand out for punters looking for angles beyond the obvious, and with the York Ebor Festival less than a week away, the smart yards are starting to fire up their ammunition. Tonight, though, the focus is firmly on Kempton, where trainer stats and form reading can carve out some genuine value.
8:30 โ Unibet More Extra Place Races Handicap Stakes (1m4f)
A 12-runner mile-and-a-half handicap with four places paid, this is the race that rewards patience and punishes blind faith in market leaders.
The selection is Forever Penywern Each-Way at 7/2 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. Warren Greatrex has been in cracking form over the last fortnight, two winners from six runners, and this four-year-old gelding has genuinely earned his place at the top of the market. Three wins from his last five starts, including back-to-back victories, is the kind of recent form you simply cannot ignore in a handicap like this. He has run over a mile and a half before, so the trip holds no fears, and while 140lbs is no featherweight, his mark reflects horses who have been winning rather than flirting around mid-table obscurity.
The main danger is The Green Mile at 5/1, who brings two wins from five recent starts and solid going experience. Neil Mulholland’s yard has been quiet lately, but the horse’s form speaks clearly enough. Watch the market for any late support.
At a big price, Cumulonimbus at 33/1 (Betfred) actually rates best on figures according to the data, with distance and going experience in hand. That 410-day absence is a brutal ask for trust, but at the price, a small each-way saver is not entirely without logic in a four-place race. For most punters, though, Forever Penywern is the sensible anchor.
5:30 โ Unibet/British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (7f)
Thirteen runners in a two-year-old fillies’ novice over seven furlongs, and with three places paid this is very much each-way territory for anything priced above single figures.
The selection here is Miss Miniver at 3/1 with Boyle Sports and LiveScore Bet, representing Roger Varian’s yard. Varian strikes at 21% at Kempton across his full record here, making him one of the course’s most reliable operators, and his last 14 days show seven winners from 28 runners. That is a yard in form, and when Varian sends a runner out at a price like this in a novice, it is worth taking seriously. Jack Mitchell takes the ride, a booking that rarely suggests a confidence-free runner.
The market shows this as a three-way split between Coaxed (John and Thady Gosden, 3/1), Marsala (Ralph Beckett, 11/4), and Miss Miniver. Beckett strikes at 18% here and has four winners in 14 days from 39 runs, so Marsala’s fourth on debut is a reasonable starting point. Coaxed, trained by Gosden, also commands respect, though the yard’s A/E of 0.79 at this track suggests they are not firing at their best relative to expectation here.
Miss Miniver, with Varian’s course record and current yard form behind her, edges it on balance of probabilities.
6:00 โ Unibet/Breeders Backing Racing EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (1m4f)
Five runners, odds-on favourite, and a race that looks straightforward on paper. But look closer.
Manaar at 1/2 (all books) is trained by William Haggas, who operates at 18% at Kempton with 137 winners from 755 runners. Cieren Fallon takes the ride. The form reads 12, a second followed by a win, and everything about this filly screams a well-prepared, improving type ready to win again. There is no each-way case here at odds-on in a five-runner race.
The more interesting angle is Lunella at 13/2 (Boyle Sports), trained by Ollie Sangster, who has been in excellent nick with three winners from 12 runners in the last fortnight. A debut third followed by a second suggests this filly is knocking on the door of a first win. If Manaar underperforms or the market has underestimated the step up to a mile and a half, Lunella is best placed to capitalise. Jack Mitchell on Manaar means Lunella gets the services of a capable booking in her own right.
Manaar wins this if she runs to her potential. Lunella is the value play for those wanting a bigger price in a small field where second is still a paid position.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 7/2 โ Boyle Sports (others: 7/2 Betfred, 7/2 LiveScore Bet)
Three wins from five recent starts including back-to-back victories is form that stands up firmly in this company. Warren Greatrex has two winners from six runners in the last 14 days, the yard is in a clear purple patch, and Forever Penywern’s experience over a mile and a half on this type of surface removes the unknowns that undermine so many rivals. In a four-place market with a competitive field, 7/2 for a horse this consistently progressive is fair value with the upside of multiple place pockets behind him.
