Killarney, Tuesday 12 May 2026 — Good To Yielding

Killarney on a May evening is one of the more underrated fixtures on the Irish flat calendar. The track suits galloping types who stay well, and good-to-yielding ground here is essentially perfect conditions for anything bred to get a trip. Three races stand out today and there are some genuinely interesting angles across the card.

5:05 — Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C & G) Maiden (1m, 12 runners)

Twelve runners in a maiden means the each-way market is worth exploiting, and at 4/1 with LiveScore Bet, Dark Leader Each-Way is the play. The Dark Angel gelding was bought for 65,000gns as a two-year-old breeze-up purchase, went unraced last season and then produced a notably promising debut at Limerick last month, finishing second over seven furlongs. That was a sharp effort given the distance today will suit him better. Seamie Heffernan rides, and J A Stack’s yard has hit form at the right time with a 1/5 strike rate from five runners in the past fortnight.

The market will be dominated by Alphonsus Liguori for Joseph Patrick O’Brien, and fair enough. Dylan Browne McMonagle takes the ride on this 210,000gns Study Of Man colt who lost by a neck on debut at Gowran, finishing four lengths clear of an experienced 79-rated rival. That is solid form and normal improvement wins this. O’Brien’s yard is in excellent nick at 14 winners from 72 runners over the last fortnight. Alphonsus Liguori wins this if he runs to expectations, but at 11/8 there is limited upside. Dark Leader at the each-way price is where the value sits in a 12-runner field.

5:40 — Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Race (1m, 6 runners)

Six runners and a market that splits into two distinct groups. Glyfada heads the betting at 11/8 and the form case is sound: runner-up on debut, improved when stepped up in trip, entered in the Pretty Polly and Irish Oaks. She is the form horse and probably wins if the mile is not just short enough to catch her out. The Camelot pedigree screams staying, and the Spotlight notes the trip may be slightly tight.

The selection here is What About Us at 5/2 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. Joseph Patrick O’Brien’s filly cost 160,000gns at the Tattersalls Ireland Breeze Up sale and made an encouraging debut when second at Dundalk last October. She did not build on that at the same track in November, but Dundalk’s artificial surface can be unforgiving and today’s good-to-yielding at Killarney is a very different test. Champion jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle is on board, the O’Brien yard is firing on all cylinders, and 5/2 for a 93-rated filly with upside is a workable price in a six-runner field. If Glyfada gets first run she might be hard to catch, but What About Us can turn the form around on this ground.

8:10 — Killarney Racegoers Club Race (1m6f, 7 runners)

The most intriguing race on the card and one where the market favourite does not tell the full story. Sky Captain is a short-priced favourite at 5/4 and the form is legitimate: maiden winner over a mile and four at Roscommon, held his own against smarter sorts at Galway over this trip. Paul Twomey is in tremendous form with nine winners from thirteen runners in the past fortnight, and fitting a visor suggests this horse has shown something at home. Hard to knock.

The value angle, though, is Kizlyar Each-Way at 8/1 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. This Joseph Patrick O’Brien gelding won in France over this exact trip, and the key detail in the Spotlight is that his French win came on good-to-soft ground. His tailed-off run on handicap debut at Navan was on heavy going, which explains everything. Back him up to good-to-yielding conditions over the distance he won over abroad, and 8/1 looks a significant overestimate of his chances. Dylan Browne McMonagle rides, which is further encouragement. Each-way at 8/1 with two places makes plenty of sense in a seven-runner field.

Ebony King also warrants a mention. The Andrew Slattery-trained gelding ran a fine second in a Grade 2 novice hurdle at Fairyhouse last month and has placed form on the all-weather. He is well capable of making the frame at 9/2.

Today’s NAP

Kizlyar — Killarney Racegoers Club Race (8:10)
Odds: 8/1 — Boyle Sports (others: 8/1 Betfred, 15/2 LiveScore Bet)

The Navan blowout on heavy ground was a false reading of this horse. He won in France at this exact trip on good-to-soft, and today’s good-to-yielding at Killarney is far closer to those conditions than anything he has faced on Irish soil. Dylan Browne McMonagle does not take rides like this without reason, and O’Brien’s yard has been relentless over the past fortnight. Eight-to-one is too big.
