Killarney Thursday Card: Best Bets from the Kerry Venue

Killarney is one of Irish racing’s most picturesque venues, and Thursday’s seven-race card offers genuine punting opportunities across the hurdle races on the bill. The going is unconfirmed, so keep an eye on any pre-race updates, as conditions at this time of year in Kerry can shift quickly and make a real difference over two and a half miles of jumping. Three races stand out for value, and Michael Kenneally’s 20% strike rate at the course from a small but telling sample is worth filing away for the feature event.

4:30 โ€” INCO Broking Maiden Hurdle (2m4ยฝf)

The maiden hurdle splits opinion between the Mullins favourite and a market rival who has shown considerably more consistency. Dawn Coming at 2/1 with Boyle Sports and Betfred catches the eye ahead of the Mullins-trained Early Dawning at Evens. Five starts into his hurdling career, C. Byrnes’ six-year-old has finished in the frame in every outing, registering a sequence of 3-3-2-2-3. That is the profile of a horse who consistently runs his race and finds only better horses on the day. Critically, the yard is in excellent form with 3 wins from 11 runners over the last fortnight.

Early Dawning has shown limited form over hurdles so far with just two starts, a fourth and a third. Mullins at Killarney clips along at 22% but the A/E of 0.89 suggests the market often overestimates his runners here. Phillip Enright takes the ride on Dawn Coming, and with the Byrnes yard firing, this looks a solid play at the bigger price. The lack of a win on Dawn Coming’s CV is the obvious sticking point, but the relentless consistency suggests the breakthrough is close.

Selection: Dawn Coming at 2/1 (Boyle Sports / Betfred)

5:05 โ€” Adare Manor Opportunity Handicap Hurdle Div I (2m4ยฝf)

This seven-runner mares’ handicap is the most straightforward race on the card. Murcia, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by Paul Townend, is the clear selection at 6/5 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. The form angle is simple: she bounced back from a run of moderate efforts to win last time out, and the ratings place her clear of this field on the back of that performance. Townend at Killarney wins at 18% and that 0.9 A/E figure is the one mild caveat, but when Mullins pitches Townend at a short-priced favourite in a small-field handicap, you need a strong reason to oppose.

The 47-day break is a genuine question, though Mullins regularly produces horses fit on a first outing after a rest of this length. Henry De Bromhead’s Birdie Or Bust at 7/2 is the each-way alternative if you want a saver. De Bromhead runs at a flat A/E of 1.0 at Killarney, which is a solid record, and Harry Cobden is an able pilot for the trip over from Britain. Her third last time out shows she is in working order, and she holds course form. For the main bet, though, Murcia is the call.

Selection: Murcia at 6/5 (Boyle Sports / Betfred)

6:45 โ€” Noel C. Duggan Structural Steel 110 Series Final Handicap Hurdle (2m4ยฝf)

The feature race of the evening and the most competitive heat on the card. Ten runners over course and distance, with the top weights hard to separate on paper. The angle here is Jupiter Du Gite Each-Way at 14/1 with Boyle Sports and Betfred, ridden by Michael Kenneally, the 5lb claimer who tops the Killarney jockey stats with a 20% strike rate and an A/E of 1.53. That figure tells you he is consistently outperforming his market position at this track, and T. Hogan’s yard is 1 from 1 in the last fortnight, small sample but all positive.

Jupiter Du Gite is lightly raced and still searching for a first win, which puts some punters off, but a read through the form shows placed efforts at 14/1 in a ten-runner handicap hurdle with a field of this quality represents genuine each-way value with three places on offer at 1/5 the odds. The 133-day absence is the legitimate concern and fitness must be taken on trust, but the combination of a bang-in-form jockey at this particular venue, a trainer arriving with a 100% recent record, and an unexposed profile that has hinted at ability, makes this a compelling each-way play at the prices.

The market leaders Global Skies at 11/4 and Tuche De Houelle at 13/2 are the two to beat in the win market. Global Skies has back-to-back wins and is fresh enough from his last run, but the ratings suggest he may be up to his mark now. Tuche De Houelle tops the ratings for this race and two wins in the last four starts is a strong profile, however Patrick O’Brien rides for a yard that has had a blank fortnight and the 14-day turnaround last time out left its mark.

Selection: Jupiter Du Gite (Each-Way) at 14/1 (Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksMurcia โ€” Adare Manor Opportunity Handicap Hurdle Div I (5:05, Killarney)
Odds: 6/5 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 6/5 Betfred, 11/10 LiveScore Bet)

Murcia comes into this seven-runner handicap as the horse to beat. Her win last time out ended a run of modest form and the ratings place her clear of her rivals on that performance. Willie Mullins and Paul Townend is about as strong a combination as you will find on the Irish circuit, and while Mullins runs at an A/E of 0.89 at Killarney, Townend is one of the few jockeys who edges that figure upward when he makes the trip. The 47-day break is the only doubt, but Mullins routinely has his horses ready first time out, and in a small field of seven with limited genuine depth, she looks the class act at a workable price.
