Leicester, Monday 13 April 2026 — Tips & Analysis
Good to firm ground at Leicester today, and the card rewards horses with turf form on a quicker surface. Three races stand out for value, and the going should separate the wheat from the chaff in a hurry. Charlie Appleby's yard has been in scorching form over the last fortnight, which makes the opener particularly interesting.
1:52 — British Stallion Studs Novice Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)
Selection: Crimson Rose (7/4 William Hill)
Appleby's yard is operating at a 50% strike rate over the last 14 days, five winners from ten runners. That stat alone puts Crimson Rose front and centre. The Godolphin filly showed real class when making short work of a Newmarket maiden last summer on ground identical to today's, and that six furlongs on good to firm is a direct line through to this contest. Her Chelmsford outing the previous month suggested she was a work in progress, but the Newmarket performance showed she had properly clicked.
Yes, she has been absent since July, but Appleby routinely sends horses back in peak condition after a break, and that yard form is the clearest signal you can get. Connor Planas picks up the ride and claims three pounds. The opposition here is decent but none of it carries the combination of form, yard confidence, and going suitability that Crimson Rose does. The 7/4 at William Hill is the best available and fair enough given the context.
Nevasca Cinza is worth monitoring for those who want a saver. The Fanshawe gelding was backed from 20/1 into 9/4 on debut, ran a cracker, and was narrowly denied at Hamilton next time. Switched stables for 100,000gns and gelded since, there is clearly plenty of residual confidence in him. At 4/1 with Bet365 he is not without appeal, but Appleby's form record makes Crimson Rose the play at the prices.
Railwayman also merits a mention on pedigree alone. A 420,000gns Blue Point half-brother to Oxted, a Group 1 winner at five and six furlongs, this colt has every reason to be sharp first time out. The tongue tie is a flag, but so is the price. If the market shortens him significantly before the off, take note.
2:22 — Leicester Novice Stakes (7f, Good To Firm)
Selection: I'll Be Back (3/1 Bet365)
Kris Burke's yard sits at four winners from 35 runners in the last 14 days, which is modest, but this colt's individual profile is compelling. By Lope De Vega out of a French Listed winner, he was sent off at odds-on for his debut at Doncaster last November and justified every penny of that faith, always travelling well and winning with authority. Heavy ground that day, and today is almost the polar opposite on good to firm, so that is a genuine question mark worth flagging.
However, Lope De Vega stock routinely handle quick ground, the pedigree on the dam side suggests versatility, and the class he showed on debut places him ahead of most rivals in this field on form. Beagle Bay at 7/2 is respected after winning at Chelmsford, but carried his head high which could mean he finds good to firm less comfortable than anticipated. Court Alert posted the best form in the field at Newmarket on ground that suits today, but his Newmarket sales race run later that season was weak and trust has to be earned back gradually.
I'll Be Back at 3/1 offers the clearest upside if he translates his debut ability to turf. The price is fair rather than generous, but in a race this open, taking the strongest form at a reasonable price makes sense.
2:52 — Picnic At The Races Bank Holiday Handicap (1m4f, Good To Firm)
Selection: Sea Of Charm Each-Way (9/2 Bet365)
This is a competitive little seven-runner handicap and the value angle sits with Sea Of Charm. The eight-year-old mare won three times over this exact trip on turf last summer, returned after nearly six months off to win at Lingfield in February, then ran creditably again most recently. Georgina Nicholls' yard is out of form at the moment, 0/6 in 14 days, but this mare has been producing her own results regardless, and the trainer stats are not a dealbreaker when the horse's personal profile is this consistent.
Good to firm is a slight unknown compared to her softer turf wins last year, but she has clearly come back well this spring and a mare this reliable over the trip does not need much of an excuse to go close again. At 9/2 with Bet365 and William Hill offering 5/1, she represents each-way value in a small field where the placed positions pay.
Seraphic has won twice on the all-weather this year and is clearly in good nick, and Expressionless is a strong candidate too having gone well at Doncaster on reappearance. This is a race where spreading the risk makes sense, and Sea Of Charm at 9/2 each-way is the call.
Today's NAP
Odds: 7/4 — William Hill (others: 15/8 Bet365, 3/1 Betfair Exchange)
The Appleby yard is firing at 50% over the last fortnight and this well-bred Godolphin filly has already shown she handles six furlongs on good to firm at Newmarket, which is exactly the going and trip she faces today. Absent since July, but that means nothing when your trainer is in this kind of form. The 7/4 at William Hill is the best available and represents genuine value given the yard stats, going suitability, and class of the form she posted last summer. Crimson Rose is the standout selection on the card.
