Leicester, Saturday 9 May 2026 — Good To Firm Tips
A seven-race card at Leicester on fast ground, and three races stand out for punters looking for genuine angles. The going is ideal for horses with proven form on quick surfaces, and that filters out a fair few of today's runners before a ball is kicked. William Haggas is operating at a healthy strike rate over the past two weeks, Saeed bin Suroor has a debutant worth watching closely, and the six-runner sprint handicap throws up a handicapper who absolutely loves these conditions. Let's get into it.
5:25 — British EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (5f, 2yo, Good To Firm)
Selection: Sky Secret (5/4 Betfred and BoyleSports)
This race is straightforward enough with Sky Secret as the standout. The Clive Cox-trained son of A'ali ran a highly encouraging debut here at this course and distance just a fortnight ago, leading long and finishing fourth of twelve on Good to Firm ground. He was sent off at 15/8 that day, handled the track well, and the Spotlight comment is explicit that improvement is certain. Cox has hit at a 2/14 clip in the last fortnight so the yard isn't flying, but this horse's own profile is strong enough to warrant confidence regardless. Returning to the same course, same distance, same going, with a debut run in the bank. That is the most reliable upgrade pattern in two-year-old racing.
Sea Mirage at 6/1 is worth a small each-way interest. Kevin Ryan's colt was very green at Pontefract on debut but finished off his race nicely, and Naval Crown juveniles tend to need a run. My Normandie represents George Scott's in-form yard at 14/1 and deserves a mention, but 5f looks sharp for a first-time-out filly bred to want more ground in time.
5:55 — British EBF Novice Stakes (7f, 3yo, Good To Firm)
Selection: Masked Warrior (5/4 BoyleSports and Betfred)
King's Cavalry is the obvious market choice and there is no shame in that. The Kingman colt was runner-up in a C&D novice last month and shaped well on both his starts. But Masked Warrior has more upside on these conditions and his profile is compelling at the same price.
William Haggas has been striking at nearly 28% over the past fortnight, and Masked Warrior showed real quality in the autumn, travelling powerfully when placed at Newbury and Nottingham over 7f and a mile respectively. He has been gelded since, which typically sharpens a horse's focus, and Good to Firm is exactly what he wants. The step back to 7f from a mile trip suits given how strongly he travels. He gets the nod over King's Cavalry on the basis of trainer form and the scope for more improvement.
Distant Moon for Saeed bin Suroor is a debutant worth keeping onside in the market. The pedigree is classy and bin Suroor's 1/3 strike rate in the last 14 days suggests the yard has runners ready. If the market shortens him significantly before post time, pay attention.
6:25 — Smooth Radio Ladies' Day Handicap (6f, Good To Firm)
Selection: Emperor Caradoc (7/2 BoyleSports, Betfred and LiveScore Bet)
Six runners and a race that sets up perfectly for the selection. Emperor Caradoc is a seven-year-old who knows exactly what he is doing, and the conditions tick every box. Both his wins in 2025 came on Good to Firm, and he landed the spoils at Thirsk last week on that exact surface. Yes, he goes up 3lb for that win, but Paul Midgley has him in a purple patch and the horse's recent form figure of 1 is the freshest data point on the card.
This Farh at 7/4 is a serious rival. He has won twice here over seven furlongs and his latest win came on Good ground last month. The worry is the drop back to six furlongs, as he has been running at seven for over a year. That extra furlong might just suit his current profile better than this shorter trip will.
Invincible Speed is 0-7 on turf but his two best grass runs have both come at this course and distance. With Jack Callan's 3lb claim, he represents the each-way alternative at 15/2 in a small field. However, at only six runners, formal each-way terms are thin so the win market is the smarter play.
- Emperor Caradoc at 7/2: won on Good to Firm twice in 2025, won last week, trainer firing
- This Farh at 7/4: course and distance winner but the 6f trip is a small question mark
- Invincible Speed at 15/2: best turf form comes at this C&D, claims help
Today's NAP
Odds: 5/4 — BoyleSports (others: 5/4 Betfred, 5/4 LiveScore Bet)
William Haggas is in top form over the past fortnight, and Masked Warrior has the profile of a horse who has been waiting for this moment. Strong-travelling, placed in quality novice company last autumn, gelded since, and returning to Good to Firm ground over seven furlongs. The form he showed at Newbury and Nottingham was considerably better than his market position suggests, and there is a big performance in this horse when it all clicks. Opposed to King's Cavalry on trainer trajectory alone.
