A midweek evening card at Leicester on good to firm ground. Three races worth opinion on, with some intriguing angles in the nursery handicap in particular. The going suits horses with pace and a clean action, so keep that in mind through the card. No blockbuster fields, but there is a clear NAP among the three featured races.

5:55 — Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (6f)

Five runners, minimal form to go on at this stage of the season with two-year-old fillies. The Crisfords saddle Coat Of Red at 6/4, and the yard has been in fine form these last two weeks with a 4/19 strike rate. At Leicester specifically, Simon and Ed Crisford have a 16% win rate and an A/E of 0.74, so they run their fair share of winners here without the market always giving them credit.

The real market mover to watch is Fairy Well for Jane Chapple-Hyam, available at 7/4 with Boyle Sports. Kevin Stott rides, and Stott has a 16% win rate at this track from 70 rides. Both of these fillies have a run under their belts showing a fourth-place effort, which edges them clear of the debutantes.

Selection: Fairy Well at 7/4 (Boyle Sports). Chapple-Hyam knows how to place a two-year-old, Stott’s course record is solid, and a first-time run under the belt over this trip puts her ahead of the newcomers on experience. If she has improved for that outing, this is a winnable race.

Six runners over five furlongs and the most interesting contest on the card. Amber Ocean heads the market at 5/4 and has winning form fresh, having scored last time out. She is top-rated on 78 and has course and going experience. The concern is the 135lb weight she shoulders from draw two, which is a stiff ask for a juvenile filly in a nursery.

The selection is Wolf’s Gallop Each-Way at 9/2 with Boyle Sports or Betfred. Tom Lacey’s yard has been quiet of late, returning only 0/7 in the last fortnight, but Lacey carries a 17% win rate at Leicester overall. Daniel Muscutt is aboard, and he is one of the more reliable names at this track with a 15% strike rate from 160 rides. The key angle here is the improving profile: Wolf’s Gallop went seventh, third, third in his last three outings, and that consistent upward curve through the grades is exactly what you want to see heading into a nursery. When James and Burke combine at a track where James thrives, the favourite has genuine substance behind its price.

Siwa Oasis has placed at this level with a form reading of 2-754, showing early promise before disappointing runs. That inconsistency is hard to trust against a yard firing at Burke’s rate.
