The market has spoken at 4/6 and the angle here is simple: a horse that has already seen a racecourse, learned from the experience, and is trained by someone who knows exactly how to place a two-year-old to win first time up. At odds-on this is not a play for value, but if you want a winner on the card it is the most likely source.

The each-way market is irrelevant at this price. If you want an alternative at bigger odds, Activity at 8/1 with Shane Foley and Jessica Harrington is interesting on debut from a yard running at 4/31 over the last fortnight, and the booking of Foley hints they have some regard for the horse.

David O’Meara does not often pitch up in Ireland, but when he does at Leopardstown his 16% strike rate is worth noting, and this is a yard that travels with purpose. Audience is rated 117 on the figures supplied, which puts him top of the field, and he has been placed in each of his last two starts including a second two runs back and a third most recently. He has run over a mile on good to firm, he is comfortable with the trip, and the 18-day turnaround looks spot on. The knock is that he has not won in recent starts, but in a Group 3 with a wide-open look to it, a horse with the highest figure who keeps running into the frame is exactly what you want.

Needle Match is the other talking point at 4/1. William Haggas is running hot with 10 winners from 50 in the last fortnight, and Tom Marquand’s 25% course record with an A/E of 1.57 is the best number on the jockey stats sheet. The concern is 96 days off the track and two unplaced efforts since his last win. If you can get 9/2 anywhere, he becomes interesting, but at the current joint-top price Audience rates the sounder bet on current form.

The market here is dominated by Ethical Diamond at 11/8, and that is fair enough given the back-to-back wins on his record. But 11/8 in a nine-runner Group 3 where the form horse had a fifth and ninth in his last two races is not a price I want to be on, regardless of the bigger picture.

Layfayette is the value play. He won last time out and was second two starts back, meaning he arrives here in the form of his life off a 48-day break. Noel Meade has saddled four winners in the last 14 days and Colin Keane takes the ride. He has experience over a mile and four furlongs on good to firm ground. At 22/1 with three places paid at 1/5 odds, the each-way terms are generous. A horse arriving off a recent win and placed run at a price of 22/1 in a competitive Group 3 is exactly the profile you want for an each-way play.

Gaucher also appeals at 12/1 for the powerful Mullins yard. A winner three back and second two back, with Ryan Moore on Ethical Diamond rather than him suggesting the stable pecking order. Worth noting that Mullins’ A/E at Leopardstown is 0.86, meaning the yard fires here without being as dominant as the raw numbers suggest. Gaucher at 12/1 each-way is a second string if you want cover on the race.
