Limerick, 2 July 2026 — Tips, Analysis & Best Bets

Partly sunny conditions and good ground at Limerick sets up a cracking Thursday card. Three races stand out for punters with something to work with: the Grade 3 Grimes Hurdle headlines at 5:20, but there is genuine interest in the 3yo maiden hurdle and the twelve-runner handicap at 4:45 before that. Good ground suits the speedier types and should produce fair jumping throughout.

Paul Townend’s 26% strike rate at this track (A/E 1.03) makes anything he rides worth a second look. R P Cody’s small-sample 21% win rate (A/E 1.52) is the eye-catcher in the trainer table, suggesting genuine course affinity when his horses line up here.

4:10 — Cappawhite Civil Engineering 3-Y-O Maiden Hurdle (2m½f)

Selection: Minella Rockett at 6/4 (Boyle Sports, LiveScore Bet)

The market suggests a two-horse race between Minella Rockett and Boston Benjamin, and the case for the former is straightforward. Connections won this exact contest twelve months ago and clearly target it. Yes, the form from Dundalk showed him tiring late, but that was a stamina test on the All-Weather after a sharp trip. Switching to timber over 2m5f on good ground is a different ask, and John Nallen’s yard know what they are doing with this type of assignment.

Boston Benjamin (7/4, Elliott, Kennedy) has obvious claims from a powerhouse yard, but his Curragh run was compromised by soft ground and the hood he wears today is a first-time addition. For a horse making his hurdles debut, that is a minor flag. Minella Rockett looks a clear value call at the bigger price and is taken to win.

4:45 — Cappawhite Civil Engineering Handicap Hurdle (2m½f, 12 runners)

Selection: Youlita Each-Way at 9/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet)

Twelve runners, a handicap, good ground, four places at 1/5 odds. The each-way case writes itself.

C Byrnes runs two in this race and his 15% course win rate (A/E 0.89) gives the yard a live chance at Limerick. Between Youlita and Eastmore, the Clonmel winner is the preferred call. Youlita won narrowly over fences last time at Clonmel, the jockey losing the whip late, yet the horse still got the job done. That is a big positive on the temperament front. He now switches back to hurdles off what the comment suggests is a lenient mark, handles this trip and ground, and a short turnaround from Clonmel suggests connections are keen to strike while the iron is hot.

Eastmore is the alternative each-way play at 9/2 with Boyle Sports or 4/1 LiveScore Bet. Five consecutive placed runs over hurdles screams a horse crying out to win a race, and first-time tongue-tie could tip the balance. But the shorter price limits the each-way appeal. Youlita at 9/1 is the bet.

Mo Ghille Mar (10/1) ran well when Wexford winner two starts back from a lower mark. She is not dismissed, but the pace concern from last time is a genuine worry, and Youlita looks the cleaner angle at a similar price.

5:20 — Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle, Grade 3 (2m½f, 7 runners)

Selection: Jesse Evans at 4/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet)

This is the race of the day and the value call goes against the market. Daddy Long Legs is odds-on at 6/5 and Paul Townend’s 26% Limerick win rate (A/E 1.03) makes anything he partners a genuine contender. The Mullins angle is obvious and the form is solid. But 6/5 about a horse whose connections are fitting first-time cheekpieces is not a bet. Cheekpieces on race day tells you connections want more from the horse. That is not a green light to play him at evens-odds.

Jesse Evans at 4/1 is a completely different proposition. He won this race twelve months ago. He is back. He won a chase at Listowel by nine lengths last time, so he arrives in form. Noel Meade’s 15% Limerick win rate (A/E 0.91) is workable, and Sam Ewing gets his first start in the saddle here. First-time tongue-tie can sharpen a horse who has been idle or inconsistent. The form line 225-31 is not flashy but the Listowel win carries serious weight over an uphill finish, nine lengths clear.

Bowensonfire (11/4, Kennedy, Elliott) is the danger. Kennedy’s 17% course rate (A/E 0.79) is slightly below par at Limerick, and the hood-fitted horse needs the race to go a specific way. If King Of Kingsfield takes them along at a strong pace, Bowensonfire could hit the line hard. But Jesse Evans is proven over course and distance, in form from chasing, and a 12-month course winner. He is the bet at 4/1.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksJesse Evans — Kevin McManus Bookmaker Grimes Hurdle (5:20, Limerick)
Odds: 4/1 — Boyle Sports (others: 4/1 Betfred, 4/1 LiveScore Bet)

Won this exact race twelve months ago and arrives in serious form after a nine-length Listowel win over fences. The first-time tongue-tie is a positive hook, and backing a Grade 3 course winner at 4/1 against an odds-on shot wearing cheekpieces for the first time represents clear value. Noel Meade knows what is needed here and Jesse Evans is the horse to beat.
