Lingfield (AW) Tips: Monday 20 April 2026

A seven-race card at Lingfield on standard Polytrack ground. Not a day for backing favourites blindly. There are three races worth picking apart properly, and one stands out as a genuine NAP on the day.

2:51 Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap (6f, AW, 5 runners)

Five runners but plenty to untangle. The market has settled on Hoodie Hoo (2/1, William Hill/Coral) and for good reason. Charles Hills has had a quiet 14-day spell (1/11), but fresh form is the key angle here. This four-year-old won on debut at two and then bolted up on his seasonal reappearance at Wolverhampton last year, making all over this exact trip. He followed that up with a bold effort against older horses at Nottingham in October before his season ended. This is his likely reappearance, the form profile screams "goes well fresh on AW," and at 2/1 he's still worth siding with.

Rare Change is the most interesting alternative at 7/2 (Bet365, William Hill, Coral). Richard Hughes sends him out returning from a long absence, but the horse is only just above his latest winning mark from last June. He won three of his first four turf starts as a three-year-old over 6f and 7f, and his sole AW run at 6f as a two-year-old at Kempton was encouraging. If the layoff hasn't blunted him, he's overpriced at 7/2.

Selection: Hoodie Hoo at 2/1. Fresh record is the angle. Lingfield's sharp 6f suits a front-runner.

3:51 Follow @AtTheRaces On Instagram Maiden Stakes (GBB Race) (6f, AW, 7 runners)

On paper this is a match between the two market leaders, and the market has got it broadly right. Golden Brown at 4/7 (Coral, Betfred, Boyle Sports) is the likely winner. The Galileo Gold gelding was much improved on his final 2025 start, finishing second of 15 in the Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar, which is a serious piece of form. Ed Walker's yard is ticking over at 3/17 in the past 14 days, not flying but not completely cold either. This is his Polytrack debut but the 6f trip and standard ground should suit a horse with that level of form. He should get the job done at the eighth attempt.

The more interesting angle is on Behike at 11/8 (Bet365, William Hill). George Scott's yard is cold (0/10 last 14 days), which will keep some punters away, but this colt cost 500,000 guineas as a yearling and showed genuine promise on debut at Ascot in September, going very freely but still finishing third of seven. The drop from 7f to 6f is worth monitoring, but a big-money son of Night Of Thunder on quicker Polytrack ground, dropping in trip to sharpen him up, could be the real threat to the favourite. If you're looking for value against the jolly, 11/8 about Behike is the logical alternative.

Selection: Golden Brown at 4/7. The Redcar form is well above this level. Should go close to landing odds.

Archer's Grace is the 5/4 favourite (Bet365, William Hill) and the case for her is straightforward. She finished second on debut at Kempton over 7f having been easy to back at 12/1, which suggested she caught the eye of someone before the off. Her recent comeback over 6f looked like a stepping stone and she wasn't seen to best advantage dropping in trip. Back to 7f on Polytrack, where she first showed her ability, this James Fanshawe filly looks likely to take a natural step forward. Fanshawe is 2/17 in the past 14 days, not a yard in rampant form, but the individual profile is compelling.

The value play in this field is Startled Lady Each-Way at 10/3 (Unibet, BetTom, Bet Goodwin). William Knight has had a solid 14 days (3/14) and this filly has placed form in novice company, running 2-3-0-4-4 in a career that suggests she's consistent without being brilliant. In a nine-runner fillies' novice over 7f she represents solid each-way material at a price bigger than the favourite.

Polka Blue at 3/1 (Bet365, William Hill) also merits a mention. She settled badly at Southwell last time, which masked a fair ability level. Give her credit for staying on in the circumstances and the return to a more conventional track could help.

Selection: Archer's Grace at 5/4. Debut form reads well, right trip, and Fanshawe fillies typically improve with racing.

Today's NAP

Hoodie Hoo โ€” Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap (2:51, Lingfield)
Odds: 2/1 โ€” William Hill (others: 2/1 Coral, 3.55 Betfair Exchange)

The fresh record is the standout angle. Hoodie Hoo won on his sole two-year-old start, then bolted up on reappearance at Wolverhampton on the AW last spring before running a bold race against older horses at Nottingham in October. He appears tailor-made for a sharp 6f on Polytrack, the trip and surface where he's been most dangerous. In a small field of five with no dominant front-runner aside from Dyrholaey, he can dictate or sit close and pounce. Charles Hills fields horses like this fresh for a reason. At 2/1 with plenty of places to lay this off if you want each-way cover in a five-runner race, the win single is the play.
