The York Ebor Festival is still a fortnight away, so this is exactly the kind of card where shrewd punters can find value away from the noise. Three races stand out as worth your attention.

This is a short-form maiden and the market has already spoken. Langdale Lass (4/9, Boyle Sports/Betfred) is the jolly on the strength of a single debut second, and the booking of Jack Mitchell, who hits 17% at this track, is exactly what you expect from a David Simcock yard horse primed for a first win. Simcock holds a 16% course strike rate here and the combination of horse, jockey and trainer all pointing in the same direction means you take the price and accept the short odds.

At bigger prices, Fortunate Each-Way at 9/1 (Betfred) is the most interesting outsider. She has six runs under her belt, has shaped for a place on more than one occasion, and Oliver Carmichael’s claim could be useful in a tight finish. Three places at 1/5 odds makes this a workable each-way bet in a ten-runner field. The 28/1 on Dun Eideann with Pierre-Louis Jamin up is eye-catching given Jamin’s A/E of 1.24 at this track and Tom Dascombe’s 21% course record, but a form line of 66R offers precious little encouragement at this stage.

The second division is more open and considerably more interesting. Jazzy Blue is the 9/4 market leader, trained by Charlie Fellowes who has gone 0 from 12 in the last 14 days, a stat that would give most punters pause. Her form of 6252 shows consistency in place but no win yet, and a yard running cold is a genuine red flag at this price.

Minnal sits alongside Jazzy Blue in the market at 9/4 (Boyle Sports/Betfred), but David Simcock has gone 0 from 10 in the past fortnight, and the form of 64 gives you little to work with for a horse priced this short.

The pick here is Lushill Each-Way at 4/1 (Betfred). J S Moore’s yard has fired in 3 from 16 over the past two weeks, which is a solid enough strike rate to trust the runner at a price. The form of 532 shows she has been knocking on the door consistently and she looks overpriced relative to the two market principals from cold stables. Taylor Fisher has the ride and three places on offer at 1/5 makes the each-way case compelling.

Silverella at 10/1 is also worth a second look. Marcus Tregoning posts a 16% course win rate and Jason Watson takes the ride, but no debut form to go on makes this speculative.

Four runners over a mile and six, and this is the sharpest betting race on the card. The shortlist effectively comes down to two horses: the jolly Tabasko and the value play Taritino.

Tabasko has been running into places consistently, back-to-back seconds in her last two starts, and Ed Walker’s yard is in cracking form with 8 wins from 34 in the last 14 days. At 5/6 (Betfred/LiveScore Bet), however, you are being asked to take a price below evens on a horse who has not won in recent starts. The market is pricing in a breakthrough win based on proximity to the leader, but “consistently second” is not the same as “about to win.”

Taritino is the selection at 9/4 (Betfred). Two wins in his last five starts, just ten days since his last run, that quick turnaround screaming confidence from trainer Joe Tickle. The comment flags he has handled this trip before, 139lb looks manageable, and a horse in a purple patch of form arriving fresh into a four-runner field is exactly where you want to take on a short-priced jolly. The each-way terms are redundant in a four-runner race, so this is a win bet at 9/4.

Russian Rumour at 6/1 deserves respect. Two wins in her last five and a placed effort last time out. The 42-day absence is the concern but Jonathan Portman’s yard is in form (3 from 15 over 14 days), and she could easily outrun her price.
