Lingfield, Saturday 30 May: Tips and Best Bets

Good to firm at Lingfield on a partly cloudy Saturday afternoon. Three races to focus on, and the going is exactly what several of these horses want. Trainer and jockey course stats paint a clear picture at this track, so lean on them hard. Jack Callan’s 25% strike rate here with an A/E of 1.79 is the standout number on the card, and George Scott’s yard is firing at 30% course wins. Both matter tonight.

With the Epsom Derby just a week away, the flat season is building nicely, and an evening at Lingfield is often where the smart yards road-test horses before bigger targets. Watch the market moves in that fillies’ novice closely.

6:42 Drain Detectives CCTV Drain Surveys Handicap (1m1f)

Selection: Footwork (3/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

The angle here is simple and stacks up on multiple fronts. Footwork produced a career-best effort at Ayr just ten days ago over this exact trip on good to firm ground, so conditions today are a repeat of what he just excelled on. The 3lb rise is offset by Jack Callan’s 3lb claim, so the horse effectively runs off the same mark. Callan is 25% at this course with an A/E of 1.79, the best jockey number on the card, and he’s 10-44 for Charlie Johnston’s yard, which is a serious booking stat. Johnston is 16% at Lingfield generally, but Callan’s partnership with the yard is the key detail the market may not have fully priced in.

Sweet Reward is the obvious danger at 9/4, and she won here on good to firm earlier this month, but a 7lb hike in the weights is a stiff ask for a nine-year-old who tends to come to hand early in the season. She may already be past her best for the spring. Footwork at 3/1 is the value in this field.

7:12 APC Electrical EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (5f)

Selection: Queencard (5/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

George Boughey’s yard has been in fine form with 7 wins from 27 runners over the past fortnight, and Queencard has the most substance of any runner in this field on what we know. A 200,000gns yearling out of Norfolk Stakes winner Shang Shang Shang, she showed plenty of early pace at Newmarket over 6f on debut before tiring late. That suggests the drop to 5f helps her, and the draw in stall six is workable. David Egan takes the ride.

Alta Regina at 8/13 is likely to be heavily backed on debut given the big breeze-up price tag and the pedigree, but 8/13 about an unraced filly in a novice is not a bet. Glamorize from the George Scott yard is interesting given Scott’s 30% course win rate and the fact the stable is 4-12 with two-year-olds this season, two of those winning on debut. The market will be worth watching on Glamorize before the off. But Queencard brings a solid piece of form to this and gets the nod at a fair price.

7:42 Free Race Replays On attheraces.com EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (7f)

Selection: Sword Salute (9/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

The form pointer in this maiden is straightforward. Sword Salute already has a piece of form to bring to the table, which most of this field does not. He finished third at Redcar over 7f on good ground 12 days ago, and the spotlight note flags the winner of that race as potentially smart. Being placed behind a potentially useful rival on debut is exactly the sort of angle that catches the eye in juvenile maidens at this level. He’s out of a 7f/1m winner so the trip suits, and improvement second time out is the likely trajectory.

Able Tasman from Archie Watson is respected given the stable’s debut record with two-year-olds, but Watson’s 14-day form of just 2 wins from 31 runners tempers enthusiasm. Nakila Sun from Andrew Balding’s yard at 9/2 is worth monitoring in the market, Balding being 7-49 in the past fortnight which suggests the yard is ticking over nicely. But Sword Salute’s form counts for a lot when most rivals are running blind, and the 9/4 is fair given Charlie Johnston has had six winners from 52 runners of late.

Jockey silksFootwork โ€” Drain Detectives CCTV Drain Surveys Handicap (6:42, Lingfield)
Odds: 3/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 3/1 Betfred, 3/1 LiveScore Bet)

Career-best form over this exact trip on identical going just ten days ago, with the 3lb rise wiped out by Callan’s claim. Jack Callan is the top-performing jockey at this course with a 25% strike rate and A/E of 1.79, and his record of 10 wins from 44 rides for Charlie Johnston makes this a deeply compelling booking. The market has this at 3/1 but the angles point to a horse who is progressive, suited by conditions, and booked with the right man at the right track.
