Lingfield, Monday 1 June 2026: Tips & Selections

A light six-race card at Lingfield today, split between turf on good to firm ground and Polytrack on the all-weather strip. With the Epsom Derby just five days away the big guns are elsewhere, but there is genuine betting interest here across three featured races. Going to firm on the turf straight suits sharp, scopey types and the Polytrack is running true. Let’s get into it.

Selection: Buy The Dip at 5/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet)

This is a 12-runner Polytrack handicap and there is a clear angle at the top of the market. Buy The Dip already has form on this exact circuit at this exact trip, winning on his comeback at Lingfield in April off a mark 2lb higher than today. The handicapper has given him a minor concession and Luke Catton, who boasts a 20% strike rate at Lingfield with an A/E of 1.37, takes the ride. That jockey-course combination is one of the most profitable on the card today.

The Spotlight concern is fair: he found it tough off the revised mark in better company last time. But this is a step back in grade and the 2lb drop brings him back to a very comfortable level. He loves the switchback track here and all the stars are aligned for a big run.

Virtue Patience at 3/1 is not a bad price for the favourite but his best form is on Polytrack and he is still 3lb higher than his January near-miss. Pitney at 7/2 has been consistent but his RPR has drifted and there is no evidence he is about to break through. Buy The Dip at 5/1 is the value play in a wide-open field.

Selection: Charles Darnay at 6/4 (Betfred, LiveScore Bet)

Only five runners here so no each-way play. James Owen has a 24% win rate at Lingfield and an A/E of 1.2, comfortably the best record of any trainer on today’s card. Charles Darnay is his runner and the form reads well. He won a Kempton maiden over 1m4f on the Polytrack in March with authority and the form has come alive since: the three horses immediately behind him that day have all won. That is the kind of franked form that wins races.

The three months off is a flag, but Owen’s yard has been in fine fettle and Rossa Ryan, who has been riding well all spring, takes the ride. This is a handicap debut which adds a small element of uncertainty, but his RPR of 82 compares well to rivals and the longer trip is no issue given how he won at Kempton.

Astrological at 7/4 to 2/1 is the obvious market rival, unbeaten since a debut second and two runs at Wolverhampton before this. The form hasn’t really been tested in open company yet and the track switch is unknown territory. At a marginal price difference, Charles Darnay offers better value with stronger proven form.

Selection: Mrair at 2/9 (Betfred)

No point dressing this up as a value play, it is not. But Mrair is a banker selection and worth noting as part of any accumulator. George Scott has a 29% win rate at Lingfield, best of any trainer here today, and Ryan Moore takes the ride after Mrair caught the eye when runner-up at Newmarket 17 days ago. The Dip at Newmarket is notorious for catching horses out and the Spotlight confirms that is exactly what happened. Moore’s booking is the signal that connections know the horse has more to offer.

For each-way interest at bigger prices, Rogue Imperial at 12/1 is worth a small play. He travelled well on debut at Yarmouth before fading late, which screams fitness. Archie Watson has an 18% strike rate at this track and the horse’s RPR of 75 from that debut marks him as capable of causing trouble at the price. Rapid Deployment from Ralph Beckett’s yard at 9/1 is another unexposed type with a pedigree that suits fast ground, and Beckett’s juveniles have a 3 from 8 record this season.

Rogue Imperial Each-Way at 12/1 (Betfred) as the interest bet. Two places at 1/4 odds in a nine-runner field is workable each-way cover.
