A six-race card at Lingfield gives us a compact evening’s punting, with three featured races worth getting stuck into. The going is unconfirmed, so keep an eye on the board before placing, but the Polytrack surface here rewards horses with consistent form profiles more than most tracks. Jim and Suzi Best continue to be the standout yard at this track on recent course stats (40% win rate, A/E of 2.42), and David Loughnane’s operation is also firing at a 27% clip here. Both are worth noting when their horses appear. With Glorious Goodwood kicking off in under a fortnight, trainers are peaking their strings now and yards running hot deserve respect.

Selection: Classic Encounter (Billy Loughnane, George Boughey) at 6/5 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)

Four runners, no hiding place. Classic Encounter tops the figures for this quartet and the angle here is straightforward: runner-up last time out, a winner earlier in the sequence, and Billy Loughnane already knows this track to a 15% win strike rate with a positive A/E. George Boughey’s yard sits at 4/23 in the last fortnight which isn’t a yard on fire, but the horse’s form does the talking. The form reads -76142 and you can forgive the weak efforts further back. He’s been placed recently, has the distance ticked off, and faces three rivals who each carry significant question marks.

Great Chieftain returns from a 92-day break and was ninth on comeback, still rusty. Desert Shadow is frustratingly consistent without winning and rates bottom of the figures. Huscal is third on figures and runs quick, which can go either way. Classic Encounter at around 6/5 is a short price but in a four-runner heat with a clear form advantage, it’s the most logical position to be in.

Again a four-runner field, and again Billy Loughnane takes the mount, here aboard the market leader. Brunhilde has form figures of 422, which tells you she keeps finding rivals too good but is consistently placed. At a mile and three and a half furlongs, this is a proper test, and her experience over the filly (Lunella, one run at 3f shorter) gives her an edge. Lunella is attractively priced at 2/1 with Betfred and has a placing on her sole start, but the step up in trip is a leap of faith on limited evidence.

Silk Mountain at 16/1 is a five-year-old maiden who has clearly had issues, and while Jim and Suzi Best’s 40% Lingfield strike rate is exceptional, the market tells you enough about this one. Battle Hymn ran 4th and 0th in two starts and isn’t compelling. Brunhilde is odds-on for a reason: she’s the most consistent and gets a jockey who knows every bend of this track.

Fire Thunder dominates the market at 1/5 and she’s been runner-up three times in a row so clearly has ability, but that price in a seven-runner field is punishing. Three consecutive seconds says a horse that keeps getting beaten. Laying short odds-on shots in maiden company is a well-worn path to profit, and the each-way market here opens up some proper alternatives.

Palm Breeze is the one to side with. David Loughnane is running at a 27% win rate at this course and a healthy A/E of 2.41, meaning his horses are consistently outperforming their market positions here. The yard has sent out three winners from 12 runners in the last fortnight, so the string is in decent shape. Rossa Ryan is a capable booking, and at 15/2 with two places on offer at a quarter the odds, the each-way case is solid in a race where the 1/5 favourite might yet get touched off again.

Mrs Mole at 12/1 with Betfred and Langdale Lass at 11/1 are worth a small interest each-way too if you fancy a saver, but Palm Breeze is the main play in this market.
