With Glorious Goodwood just six days away, many of the better-fancied yards will be keeping their powder dry for the big occasion. That creates opportunity in midweek Lingfield cards like this one, where lightly raced or unexposed horses can grab a race that looks stronger on paper than it actually is.

George Boughey has been ticking along at 5/20 over the last 14 days, a respectable yard in form, and the 4-year-old’s form of 1/2 is about as compact and tidy as it gets for a race like this. Loughnane knows this track, hitting at 16% here, and there is nothing in this field to threaten a horse with genuine winning form. Yazoo at 10/1 has unseated in his latest run and Coilltedudeisback is a 28/1 shot without a win to his name. This is a formality rather than a contest. Back Asuka at Boyle Sports if you need a banker leg in an accumulator. Single win only, no each-way value at this price and with this field size.

What’s The Plan is the market leader and on ratings he makes sense, but a horse that has finished fourth in four of his last six starts is a horse that finds a reason not to win. James Fanshawe’s record at Lingfield is exceptional, 24% wins at an A/E of 1.09, but his runner’s consistency without converting is a flag rather than a green light.

Emma’s Letter, trained by Ed Dunlop with three wins from 21 runners over the last fortnight, is a winner last time out and has already shown she can handle today’s trip and today’s going. A ninth two runs back is the blemish on her card, but horses that win, then find a surface or trip that doesn’t suit, then bounce back are the ones worth following. Loughnane again takes the ride, a jockey who is comfortable at this venue. At 11/4, she offers better value than the 6/5 market leader who has made a habit of coming close without finishing the job.

Almekarem is interesting at 10/3 given Sir Mark Prescott’s 19% course record, but 216 days off the track is a serious concern at these weights. Leave him for his next run when he’ll know he’s had a race again.

Eight runners over seven furlongs on good to firm, and this is the race of the evening for punters looking for value. Hilltop tops the ratings and is probably the most likely winner at 3/1, but in an eight-runner fillies’ handicap with three places paid, looking at 14/1 makes a lot more sense when the angle is this clean.

Scott Dixon posts an A/E of 1.51 at Lingfield. That is not a stat to ignore. It means his horses consistently win at bigger prices than you’d expect, and they return profit to level stakes at this track. Bella Bisbee was a winner three runs ago, has course and distance form, and her last run as a blank needs context: form horses go in and out of condition, and Dixon is clearly not a trainer who runs them when they’re not ready given his conversion rate here.

At 14/1 each-way, 3 places at 1/5 odds, she only needs to hit the frame to return a solid profit. Hilltop and Kaori look the two most likely to fill the places alongside any winner, but in a wide open race with this much compressed form, 14/1 is the standout play.
