Three races on the Lingfield card worth getting stuck into tonight, with good to firm ground suiting the speedier types and a couple of trainer angles worth flagging before a penny goes down. Jack Callan’s 25% strike rate at this track is the single best number on the card, and he rides in two of our three featured contests. David Loughnane’s 29% course record also catches the eye, though his runner here is a debutante so we’re working blind on form. Keep half an eye on the Austrian Grand Prix build-up if you need something to fill the afternoon, but the Lingfield card tonight is the main event for racing punters.

Ed Dunlop’s yard hasn’t been firing recently at 1/17 over the last 14 days, but the horse’s own profile does the talking here. Magical Merlot was beaten just over a length into fourth last time, and the reason is well documented: a tardy start forced Paddy Bradley to make up ground from the back, costing him vital lengths at a crucial stage. Strip that out and you’re looking at a horse who acts on good to firm, stays this trip comfortably, and is rated the top selection on the form figures by a clear margin.

His record of 21-534 flatters to deceive. Win two starts back, runner-up the start before that, and an excusable fourth latest. There’s more in the tank. At 10/3 in a five-runner field, he’s not screaming value, but he is the most logical winner on honest analysis. Savvy Disko is a threat given his tenacity and course form, and Jack Callan’s 25% record around here is always worth respecting. But Savvy Disko running freely early over the extra furlong is a real concern in a handicap setting, and his price of 13/8 looks too short for a horse on handicap debut who may need to settle.

Magical Merlot at 10/3 is the call. Win only, given the small field.

7:25 — Choice Training Handicap (5f)

Selection: Sam’s Xpress Each-Way (10/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

On paper, Rogue Bullet looks the bet in this race. Back to his best last time, first-time cheekpieces applied, James Owen running at 23% course strike rate with an A/E of 1.13, and Jack Callan aboard. That is a formidable combination. Ancient State is also legitimate after a four-length win off a lower mark, though an 8lb rise in the weights is significant at sprint level.

The angle that interests me more, though, is Sam’s Xpress at a double-figure price. His form figures of 1-3369 look moderate, but dig into the detail and you find a horse who burned far too freely on the front end last time and paid the price. Go back to his win and you see a horse who genuinely has the class to compete in this grade. He returns from 99 days off, which at 10/1 is already priced into the market, and he’s rated highest on the assessment that forms part of the race analysis. Good to firm suits, five furlongs suits, and if Dylan Hogan gets him to settle rather than blaze from the front, he comes into this with a live chance that his price doesn’t reflect.

At 10/1, the each-way case is simple. Two places at 1/4 odds means you’re effectively backing him at 2.5/1 for a place, and he’s a horse whose recent outings have been misleading. Take the 10/1 each-way.

7:55 — Getaway To Cyprus EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (5f)

Selection: Havana Flash (3/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Terminology is the clear market leader at 5/6, and the form angle is legitimate. Third on debut in a race whose form has been boosted at a high level since tells you the ability is there, and Archie Watson’s 17% course record means she’s not a hopeless price either. But 5/6 about a filly who has only had one run is short enough to put me off.

Havana Flash appeals at 3/1. George Boughey’s yard has been in excellent recent form at 7/33 over the last 14 days, a genuine strike rate worth noting. Callan takes the ride, and we already know what his 25% record at Lingfield looks like. The filly showed speed on debut before tiring in a race that was clearly too hot for her on the day. Dropping back in class is a big positive, the dam won at Listed level, and the pace pedigree suggests five furlongs on quick ground is exactly where she wants to be. Boughey also won this specific contest last year, which is the kind of trainer-race combination you never dismiss lightly.

Najmet Minzaal is a fair each-way option at 5/1 if you want cover, with an encouraging debut and a more positive ride likely to bring improvement. But the main vote goes to Havana Flash, who should strip fitter and smarter for that first run and has every angle working in her favour tonight.
