Market Rasen, Thursday 28 May: Tips and Selections

Good ground, sunshine, and a manageable six-race card at Market Rasen. This track rewards jumpers who travel well and handle a flat-ish, galloping circuit, and the going today is exactly what several of these horses have been waiting for. Three races stand out with clear angles, so let’s get into them.

6:00 โ€” Summer Plate Ladies Day Maiden Hurdle (2m2ยฝf)

Selection: Jessie Jump Jet (2/1, Betfred)

The form book on most of these is either thin or actively concerning. Aimeric is the talking horse, but the Spotlight sums him up perfectly: hesitant at flights, tailed off in a Flat handicap, and “very tricky to weigh up.” At 6/4, that is not a price for a horse with question marks over his jumping. Wahraan has a decent RPR of 118 but is described as an awkward ride who refuses to settle and hangs. The risk profile there is obvious.

Jessie Jump Jet is 0-9 over hurdles, yes, but she went close in a Class 5 handicap at Warwick over 2m5f on good ground this month. Dropping back to 2m2f here after that run actually looks a positive, not a negative. She finished second and looks to have been dropped into a race the form book says she can compete in. Samuel Drinkwater has had limited runners lately but this looks a deliberate placement. At 2/1 she represents the clearest case in the field and her recent form is the most relevant to today’s conditions.

7:32 โ€” Anji Fletcher Memorial Handicap Hurdle (2m4ยฝf)

Selection: Snatch A Glance Each-Way (11/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

The combination of jockey and trainer here is worth a second look. Fern O’Brien carries a 30% win strike rate at Market Rasen with an A/E of 1.41, the standout figure among all riders today. Trainer Fergal O’Brien runs at 20% here. When that combination aligns, you pay attention.

Snatch A Glance won a maiden at Ludlow in the autumn and then finished a solid third of six in a novice event over this exact course and distance last month, again on good ground. He handles this track, he handles this going, and he now steps into a handicap for the first time. First-time handicappers can be difficult to assess for the assessor, and that uncertainty can translate into a workable price. At 11/2 he is not overpriced given the course-and-distance form, and the trip extension looks like a positive.

Lord Chamberlain is the market leader and deserves respect after winning by 12 lengths at Hereford, but he is now 12lb higher than when he produced that eye-catching performance. That is a significant ask for a five-year-old who was then only third under a 7lb penalty. High Dancer on a good mark with cheekpieces is the main danger, but Snatch A Glance each-way at 11/2 is the value play.

6:30 โ€” Geoff Handley’s Grand 80th Handicap Chase (2m5ยฝf)

Selection: Play By The Rules (7/4, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Small fields can be tricky, but this one reads clearly. El Muchacho is a consistent performer and the form around the course and distance is solid, no question. But Play By The Rules carries a compelling angle that makes 7/4 very acceptable.

He returned from a long absence with a promising run at Newcastle in March, travelling strongly for a long way over 2m4f on good to soft. He was then brought down at Hexham, an unlucky exit that tells you nothing about his ability and everything about bad luck. He is described as well handicapped on old form, and trainer Adam Nicol has gone 3-from-8 in the last 14 days, a yard that is clearly firing. This horse has been placed in a race he can win. The going suits, the trip suits, and the handicap mark is favourable. El Muchacho is a worthy rival but Play By The Rules has the upside angle here.

Odds: 11/2 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 11/2 Betfred, 5/1 LiveScore Bet)

Course-and-distance form in the book on good ground, stepping up in trip for a handicap debut which gives the assessor a problem setting the mark, and the top jockey-trainer combination at this track in Fern O’Brien and Fergal O’Brien. The 30% course win rate and A/E of 1.41 for the rider is the best stat on today’s card. At 11/2, this is a value each-way selection with a genuine winning case.
