Three wins from the last four starts, including a hat-trick in progress, with the one blip being a pulled-up effort four starts back that reads more like an interrupted run than a genuine stamina concern. He handles today’s trip and going, Adrian Keatley is a 24% course trainer with a strong A/E of 1.37, and there is no reason to think this winning sequence is finished at 9/1 in an open handicap. That price is too big for a horse in this sort of vein.

Moon Chime is the danger. Won last time out, tops the field on the tissue figures, and the Killahena/McPherson combination is the most profitable course trainer combination in the data at A/E 1.53. The 52-day break and those two blank ninths are the reservations, but at 12/1 he is worth a small saver if you want extra coverage.

2:45 — Betway Summer Plate Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) (2m5½f, Chase, Good)

The feature race of the day, and a proper contest. Fourteen runners, the Premier Handicap status, and a prize pot of over £42,000. Four places at 1/5 terms makes the each-way game worthwhile across most of this field.

Soul Icon is the one that catches the eye most. Tops the figures in this field, handles the trip and the going, and Harry Cobden takes the ride. That last point matters: Cobden wins 28% of his races at Market Rasen from 64 rides, with an A/E of 1.23. He does not turn up here without a plan. The obvious concern is fitness after 99 days off, and a run that includes an unseat and a brought-down does not inspire confidence in recent form. But when the ability ceiling is this high and the price is 9/2 with Betfred, this is the market doing the thinking for you.

The selection, though, is Mahons Glory Each-Way at 10/1 (Boyle Sports or Betfred). Won last time out, two wins from the last five starts, has already run over this exact trip and going. The 29-day break is a non-issue at this level. The sixth three starts back is the only real blemish on a profile that reads progressively. Dylan Cunha’s yard has not been firing over the past fortnight at 0/13, which is the risk, but at 10/1 in a competitive handicap with the horse in form and proven at the course conditions, the value case holds up. Four places at 1/5 gives this real coverage in a 14-runner field.

Queensbury Boy at 6/1 or 7/1 is the other live contender. James Bowen rides (19% at Market Rasen, A/E 1.14), won three starts back, and the Mickey Bowen yard knows this track extremely well at 24% strike rate. The 8th last time out needs forgetting, but the form before it suggests that run was an aberration.

The selection is Prince Quattro Each-Way at 13/2 (Boyle Sports or Betfred). Trainer James Owen is a 24% course specialist at Market Rasen with an A/E of 1.18, and Sean Bowen takes the ride. Sean Bowen wins 23% at this track and has a respectable A/E of 1.02. The combination of a top course trainer with a top course jockey on a horse with two wins in the last five starts and a runner-up last time out is a compelling angle at 13/2. He handles the going, he is fresh on a 22-day break, and the market has priced him realistically without going silly. The figures say seventh of twelve, which is honest rather than damning.

Glory And Honour at 18/1 is worth a small each-way interest for those wanting a longer-priced each-way dart.
