Musselburgh, Saturday 4 April 2026 — Good To Soft
A sharp seven-race card at Musselburgh with the ground riding Good To Soft, which is the critical factor across all three featured races. The Listed Goliath Cup heads the bill, but the two handicaps either side of it offer the better value opportunities. Here is where the money goes.
1:55 — Livescore Bet Silver Arrow Handicap (7f)
Ten runners, Good To Soft, and a race that rewards horses who act on cut in the ground. This is where Gweedore Each-Way comes in at 11/1 with William Hill and Coral.
Six course wins tell you everything about this horse's relationship with Musselburgh, and crucially the latest of those came over this exact course and distance on soft ground in November. He is off the same mark as when finishing second here last April and the soft-ish going is exactly what he wants. Yes, he is nine years old and drawn widest of the field, but trainer Katie Scott knows this horse inside out and when Gweedore lines up at Musselburgh on cut ground you take notice.
The danger is Midnight Gun, the 15/8 favourite. James Doyle rides and the Doncaster form on soft in October is strong, only just failing after meeting trouble. That is a legitimate winning chance on paper. But 15/8 in a ten-runner handicap is a price to oppose, not chase.
Also worth a mention: Goldmoyne has been winning for fun on the AW, six times including a four-timer, but his turf form in Ireland was in modest company and this is a significant step up in class. Not for me at 11/1 when there is a cleaner angle elsewhere in the field.
Selection: Gweedore each-way, 11/1 William Hill/Coral
2:30 — Virgin Bet Goliath Cup Stakes (Listed Race, 1m6f)
Six runners, Listed class, and the favourite Al Qareem is odds-on for good reason. This is a case where you back the form pick rather than hunt for value at short odds.
Al Qareem is the clear selection at 4/5 with Bet365. K R Burke's yard is not firing at two from 19 in the last 14 days, which is a mild concern, but the horse's profile overrides the yard stats here. Twelve career wins, career-best form delivered in a four-win sequence last season from April to October, and Clifford Lee stays on. He has never won first time out but has run creditably on reappearance before, and at 1m6f on Good To Soft he has every right to be favourite.
Roaring Legend at 17/2 is the interesting each-way alternative. Two solid second-place finishes this February on the AW, a second wind operation having cleared up whatever was hampering him last May. Olly Murphy's yard is in decent nick at seven from 22 over the past fortnight, and peak turf form puts him right in the mix for a place. The Listed standard requires a step forward from his AW runs but the profile of a horse with a cleared medical issue and a trainer in form is worth 17/2 each-way.
Mount Atlas at 7/2 is making his first start over 1m6f, having spent his career at 1m4f. Andrew Balding's yard is ticking over at eight from 37, Oisin Murphy is a significant booking, but there is a genuine question mark over the trip extension. Pass at that price.
Selection: Al Qareem, 4/5 Bet365
3:42 — Virgin Bet Scottish Sprint Cup Handicap (5f)
Fourteen runners, five furlongs, Good To Soft. Big field, competitive handicap, and this is exactly the race where course knowledge and current form intersects with handicap value.
Pilgrim Each-Way is the selection at 11/2 with Bet365 or 5/1 with William Hill. This horse won the 5f 3yo handicap at Royal Ascot in 2024. He is a proven course and distance winner here at Musselburgh. His AW runs this winter have been below par but he met trouble on his most recent start and the form should be treated with caution rather than written off. A good-value claimer in William Pyle is booked, which keeps the weight down, and he is a horse who was well handicapped at his peak and has not been tested properly since. The Barron yard is quiet at zero from five but this is a horse whose profile speaks louder than 14-day trainer stats.
Democracy Dilemma is the most obvious danger. Tough front-running 5f specialist, decent third at Lingfield six weeks ago to sharpen him up, but carrying 138lbs means he is giving weight to the entire field including Pilgrim. Robert Cowell has two runners here and is modest at one from six in the past fortnight. He is still respected but the price of 5/1 at Bet365 looks short given the weight burden.
Tropical Storm at 5/1 is interesting after a gelding operation. Won a Listed race at York last May in good-to-firm conditions and returns on a handy mark with Andrew Balding in form. The ground concern is real though. His York win came on quicker ground and the Good To Soft at Musselburgh is different territory for a horse whose form tailed off badly last season. Could be the each-way banker if conditions come up in his favour, but Pilgrim offers the cleaner angle.
Selection: Pilgrim each-way, 11/2 Bet365
Today's NAP
Odds: 11/1 — William Hill (others: 11/1 Coral, 13/1 Betfair Exchange)
Six course wins at Musselburgh, the most recent over this exact course and distance on soft ground in November. He runs off the same mark as when second here last April and the Good To Soft conditions are precisely what he requires. The wide draw is the only obstacle but at 11/1 in a 10-runner handicap, a course specialist proven on this ground represents outstanding each-way value.
