Musselburgh Tips: Wednesday 29 April 2026

A seven-race card at Musselburgh on good ground, and there are three races worth picking apart for angles. The track rewards horses that handle a left-hand bend and front-runners often do well on the straight five, so pace and early speed matter today. Let's get into it.

1:35 โ€” EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (5f, Good)

Four runners, small field, no each-way here. This is essentially a match between two horses.

Hickory Lad (Rowan Scott, 4/5 Bet365) is the one to beat, and the form behind the price makes sense. On debut at Thirsk 19 days ago he went off at 18/1, shaped with genuine promise finishing second to a Kevin Ryan hotpot, and pulled clear of the field by a distance. That kind of performance from a complete unknown deserves serious respect. Phillip Makin's yard is quiet for the last fortnight (0/4) but this is a horse showing ability rather than relying on stable form.

The threat is Kodi Bear Light (Clifford Lee, 13/8 Bet365) from K R Burke's yard, which is firing at a strong 10/41 clip in the last 14 days. Closely related to a 93-rated sprinter and half-sister to multiple AW winners, the breeding is there. Burke knows what he's buying and 28,000 euros for a filly by that page suggests connections expect something. If the market tightens significantly at the off, take note.

Selection: Hickory Lad at 4/5 Bet365. The debut form is solid enough to justify favouritism and the drop in class from facing a Ryan bullet should see him win this comfortably. Kodi Bear Light keeps you honest, but on known evidence Hickory Lad sets the bar too high for an unraced rival.

2:05 โ€” Virgin Bet Supports Safe Gambling Handicap (5f, Good)

Seven runners, a proper competitive three-year-old handicap on the straight five. Two horses stand out clearly from the rest.

Riffa Spirit (Zak Wheatley, 19/10 7Bet) comes into this off a reappearance run that was full of encouragement. He led until well inside the final furlong at Southwell, first run for Declan Carroll after switching yards. The drop from maiden company into handicaps and this lower grade looks spot on, and if he takes the standard step forward off that run he's going to be hard to hold off. Carroll has two winners from 16 runners over the last fortnight, quietly ticking over.

The danger is Pivotal Terms (Andrew Mullen, 4/1 Bet365) for Iain Jardine, who won over 6f at Newcastle 16 days ago. Last-time-out winners in this grade deserve respect, though the Spotlight rightly queries whether dropping to 5f for the first time is ideal given how she finished that race. Watch the market, but the 5f move introduces a question mark.

Fille Unique (Paul Mulrennan, 10/3 Bet365) also appeals as a place shout at the very least, with a close third at Newcastle last week suggesting she's knocking on the door. Rebecca Menzies' Data Fata Secutus settled much better on reappearance and can go close too.

Selection: Riffa Spirit at 19/10 7Bet. Form, class drop, and trainer angle all converge. Confidence this is a horse going in the right direction.

3:15 โ€” Hibernian Community Foundation Handicap (5f, Good)

Eight runners, a proper sprint handicap. Three places on offer, making each-way essential for anything at a price.

Rosenpur Each-Way (Paul Mulrennan, 9/4 Bet365) is the logical pick. Five wins in 2025, every single one of them around a left-hand bend at five to five-and-a-half furlongs. Musselburgh ticks every box. His Catterick reappearance last week saw him go close over six furlongs, a trip longer than ideal, which means today's drop back to five should suit perfectly. Same mark, right track, right conditions. Jennie Candlish's yard is quiet lately (2/22) but Rosenpur does his talking on the track and his profile here is as clean as you'll get.

Al Hussar (Oliver Stammers, 11/4 Bet365) for Grant Tuer (3/10 last 14 days, a yard firing hard) has gone well twice over this course and distance this month. He's the main market rival and the in-form yard makes him dangerous. But Rosenpur's course-and-distance profile and the fact he's returning to his perfect conditions tips the balance.

Knicks Each-Way (Joanna Mason, 6/1 Bet365) is worth a small each-way interest. Cheekpieces back on for the first time since a Nottingham win in 2023, was a close third here on good to soft last September, and his Thirsk reappearance was genuinely encouraging in a big field. A non-runner here on Sunday is explained by a vet's cert, so there's no hidden concern about the race. Easterby's yard is ticking at 5/32 over 14 days. At 6/1 for a place he's worth including in any each-way combination.

Selection: Rosenpur each-way at 9/4 Bet365. Three places at 1/5 odds. Conditions couldn't be more tailored to him.

Today's NAP

Rosenpur โ€” Hibernian Community Foundation Handicap (3:15, Musselburgh)
Odds: 9/4 โ€” Bet365 (others: 9/4 William Hill, 3.85 Betfair Exchange)

Five wins last season, every single one around a left-hand circuit at five furlongs. Musselburgh is the perfect venue. His Catterick reappearance came over six furlongs, a trip that stretches him, and he still went close. Back to five today on good ground at the same handicap mark, with Paul Mulrennan booked and the course profile ticking every box. This is a horse in the right race at the right track. Each-way at minimum, win bet if you want to be bold.
