Musselburgh Monday: Three Races, Three Angles Worth Backing
A seven-race card at Musselburgh on good ground suits the flat galloping track perfectly. The course rewards horses that travel well through a race and jockeys who know the layout. Sam James and Connor Beasley both post strong numbers here, and Grant Tuer’s 23% strike rate at this venue is the best on the card. Three races stand out with selections worth backing.

Selling stakes for two-year-old fillies are notoriously tricky to read, but this one has a shape to it. Lady Dublin is the obvious pivot point at 11/8 with Boyle Sports, and that price is probably right. Trained by Ollie Pears, she finished off her race well when fourth at York last time and gets the step up to 7f here, which should draw out further improvement. She’s top-rated in the field and the profile screams “win coming soon.”
The each-way alternative is Liveadream at 9/4 with Boyle Sports. Phillip Makin has been in good form lately, and Sam James takes the ride. James hits 21% at this track with an A/E of 1.30, the strongest jockey number on the card. Chester debut form reading four beaten three lengths is solid for this grade. Two runs in, with the benefit of that experience banked, she could outrun her odds if the pace suits.
Selection: Lady Dublin at 11/8 (Boyle Sports). The trip upgrade is the key angle. York form in a better race than this gives her a clear edge on paper.
3:45 โ Haysmith By A Nose 60th Birthday Handicap (1m4ยฝf)
Gemini Man Each-Way at 11/2 with Boyle Sports is the selection here. The eight-year-old won a classified race at Newcastle by three-quarters of a length last time out, confirming consistent form at 10-12f. Today’s 1m4ยฝf at Musselburgh sits comfortably within his proven trip range. He acts on a sound surface and the good ground forecast suits. The switch back to turf from Newcastle’s Tapeta is the one thing to note, but he has handled both surfaces in the past.
Iain Jardine has fired in four winners from 36 runners in the last 14 days, a yard in decent nick. Andrew Mullen rides and knows the horse. At a price in a seven-runner handicap, the each-way terms at 2 places, 1/4 odds are worth taking.
Naturalia at 5/2 deserves a mention. Beaten a head at Carlisle last time, travelling well through the field and only caught at the death. That kind of near-miss form in this company makes her a genuine threat and she’s shortened accordingly. She could finish in the first two, so if you want to side with the market, there’s a logical case.
Selection: Gemini Man each-way at 11/2 (Boyle Sports). Recent winning form, right trip, right ground, trainer in form.
4:45 โ Stand In What You Stand For Handicap (1m1f)
The most interesting race of the day. Six runners, competitive weights, and two horses bang in form pulling in opposite directions on price.
Port Darwin at 3/1 with Boyle Sports is dangerous. A winner by two and a quarter lengths at Hamilton just five days ago off this identical mark is a stat that demands respect. Charlie Johnston has five winners from 48 runners in the last 14 days, and Hamilton to Musselburgh is a natural step. The concern is the quick turnaround and a field that is undeniably stronger than what he faced at Hamilton. Inconsistency has been a feature of his profile and there are better priced options.
Welbury is the 7/4 market leader and the form says he should go close. Two runner-up finishes in handicaps, including one off a mark a pound lower than today, paint the picture of a horse who is consistent and progressing. Connor Beasley rides and he’s a 16% course specialist here. The first-time cheekpieces add a small element of the unknown but more often than not those sharpen a horse up rather than unsettle them.
The value selection, though, is Blakefell at 7/2 with Betfred or LiveScore Bet. Ivan Furtado hits 17% at Musselburgh with an A/E of 1.24, one of the sharpest trainer course figures on the card. Last time at Doncaster, Blakefell was beaten three lengths off a mark a pound higher than today, going to the front and keeping on. Jason Hart rides. The trip at 1m1f is a small step beyond his proven best at 7f but the Doncaster run suggests he’ll see it out on this evidence. At a slightly bigger price than the two market leaders, this is the each-way play with room for upside.
Selection: Blakefell Each-Way at 7/2 (Betfred, LiveScore Bet). Trainer fires at Musselburgh, proven off this mark, value against the two short-priced rivals.

Odds: 11/2 โ Boyle Sports (others: 11/2 Betfred, 11/2 LiveScore Bet)
Gemini Man arrives off a convincing Newcastle win over a similar trip, form that sits well above what this seven-runner handicap can throw at him. Good ground confirmed, yard in form, and a horse that acts on both surfaces removes the turf switch risk. At 11/2 against a field where the favourite has a question mark over first-time cheekpieces and a long absence, this is the best value proposition on the card.
