Musselburgh, Tuesday 30 June: Tips and Selections

A seven-race card at Musselburgh on good ground, with showers forecast to keep the surface honest. The Edinburgh track rewards course specialists and in-form northern trainers, so those stats carry real weight today. Three races stand out for punters looking for value, and there is a genuinely interesting NAP at a double-figure price. India open their Test series against England tomorrow, but today the focus is firmly on Musselburgh’s straight seven and a mile-plus handicap where the form angles are sharper than the market suggests.

2:30 โ€” EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes (5f)

Selection: Heffernan Kingdom (9/4, Boyle Sports / 9/4 LiveScore Bet)

Ben Haslam runs at 20% winners here with an A/E of 1.16, which means his runners consistently outperform their market prices at this track. Heffernan Kingdom is on an improving curve, showing inexperience when asked to lead on her debut before posting a significantly better effort when third at Wetherby second time out. The step back to 5f today looks like a shrewd move from the stable, and good ground suits her stride pattern. Andrew Mullen knows this track well and Haslam’s horses at Musselburgh are a consistent source of profit.

The danger is Turnstile, who is consistent and proven at the trip, but at 10/11 you are laying a penalty on a horse that has not yet won. Heffernan Kingdom at 9/4 represents the better risk-reward. Lexington Boom is interesting on debut for the in-form Grant Tuer yard, but the February foaling date and lack of a racecourse read make him a watch for now.

3:00 โ€” Join Racing TV Now Handicap (1m1f)

Selection: Pandemonium Each-Way (9/1, Boyle Sports / 9/1 Betfred)

The angle here is simple and concrete: Pandemonium was beaten a short-head at this exact course and distance last time out, off a mark just 2lb lower than today. He knows this track, he handles the distance, and the cheekpieces added today should sharpen his focus and help address the known tendency to idle under pressure. Simon and Ed Crisford have had five winners from 28 runners over the last 14 days, which is a yard operating with reasonable momentum. Oisin Orr in the saddle is another positive.

The market is dominated by High Degree at 7/4, who is the classiest horse in the race and carries Clifford Lee, who wins at 22% at Musselburgh. That is fair value for a place shout but not at those odds for a win bet. High Degree is the benchmark, but Pandemonium at 9/1 each-way with three places at 1/5 gives you genuine each-way coverage at a track he has already come close to winning on.

Haayimm is honest and unexposed but carries an opening mark that asks questions. Strength Of Spirit is consistent and K R Burke famously won this race last year, worth a each-way saver at 11/2 if you want to go wider.

4:00 โ€” Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Handicap (7f)

Selection: Iris Dancer Each-Way (11/2, Boyle Sports / 11/2 Betfred)

Iris Dancer won at Hamilton five days ago by over two lengths, stepping up with each run this season and doing so with authority. She acts on any going, handles 7f, and trainer Tristan Davidson has posted three winners from just 11 runners in the last 14 days, which is a 27% strike rate. That is a yard in form. First-time blinkers were fitted at Hamilton and they clearly worked, keeping her focused and competitive throughout.

The concern is the quick turnaround, but northern handicappers regularly run their horses at short intervals when they are in form and the mark is live. The official rating is 5lb higher than Hamilton, which is manageable given the margin of victory there.

Son at 9/4 is the form pick and is consistent, but three places at 1/5 in an eight-runner field means each-way punters are paying for a very short window. The Gay Blade has won three on the bounce but goes up sharply in the weights. Iris Dancer at 11/2 each-way is the play, with a horse firing at the right time for a trainer in form.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksPandemonium โ€” Join Racing TV Now Handicap (3:00, Musselburgh)
Odds: 9/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 9/1 Betfred, 17/2 LiveScore Bet)

A horse beaten a short-head at this course and distance last time, now back over the same track and trip with cheekpieces added for focus. The Crisford yard is running at an acceptable clip, the course form is already there, and 9/1 about a horse that came within a whisker of winning here is generous. Good ground suits and the distance is proven.
