Newbury, Monday 1 June 2026: Tips and Best Bets

Light rain is forecast over Newbury today but the ground is officially good to firm, and that’s unlikely to shift significantly across a six-race card. It’s a day for handicappers with improving profiles, and there are three races worth getting stuck into. With the Epsom Derby just five days away, the Flat is firmly in its stride, and Newbury provides a solid supporting act for punters who know where to look.

2:50 โ€” BetVictor Backing England To Win Handicap (1m, Good To Firm, 12 runners)

Selection: River King at 11/4 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)

This 12-runner handicap over a mile sets up nicely for River King, trained by Richard Hannon, whose yard is in decent nick with 10 winners from 53 runners in the last fortnight. The four-year-old gelding returns to a mile after winning over 1m2f at Windsor last June, then posted a highly encouraging second on his handicap debut at the same distance just 11 days ago, pulling clear with the winner having travelled beautifully. That run screams improvement once he gets into a more suitable rhythm over the shorter trip, and the Spotlight notes that returning to a mile is no issue. A 3lb rise puts him in at a workable mark and he’s far from fully exposed. Pat Dobbs takes the ride, a pairing worth following on form horses at this time of year.

Classic Encounter is the obvious danger at 10/3, having bolted up in a Class 4 at Redcar last week, but he now faces a stiffer task stepped up in grade and is penalised for that easy win. River King was doing this at a higher level last time and is the one to beat at the prices.

4:35 โ€” South Downs Water Handicap (2m, Good To Firm, 8 runners)

Selection: Naval Tribute at 11/8 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)

Only eight runners here over two miles, so each-way doesn’t apply, and Naval Tribute merits a straight win bet. The five-year-old gelding has transformed since being switched to Flat turf racing with a visor added. He won well at Beverley in April over 1m4f on good to firm ground, then finished a solid second of 12 in an apprentice handicap at Ascot over this exact trip last month. Crucially, the winner of that Ascot race followed up at Chester on Saturday, which gives the form a sharp upgrade. Naval Tribute is up just 1lb for that effort and goes here with form directly relevant to this race, on ground that suits, over the right distance. Cieren Fallon, a jockey at the top of his game this season, takes the ride. At 11/8 this isn’t a value price, but it’s a confident each-way conversion into a win bet given the small field and the strength of the form.

Calvert is the main threat, having finished behind Naval Tribute at Ascot from the same mark, but he’s 1-20 career and that win record tells its own story. John Galt is interesting on turf debut at Leicester last time but stepping up to two miles is a big ask on limited evidence.

5:10 โ€” West Court Retreat Supports Heros Charity Handicap (1m2f, Good To Firm, 9 runners)

Selection: Nanino Niyati Each-Way at 10/3 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)

This is where the Newbury course stats become directly relevant. Callum Rodriguez has a stunning 29% strike rate at this track from 14 rides, with an A/E of 1.84, which means punters backing his Newbury mounts have made serious money. He’s on board Nanino Niyati, trained by Owen Burrows, who himself runs to a solid 20% course strike rate at Newbury with a level-stakes profit. When the trainer and jockey combination both carry meaningful Newbury bias, you sit up and take notice.

The filly herself shaped well on her stable debut at Ascot last month, finishing fourth in a 1m2f handicap on good to firm ground without being beaten far. She won over this trip for the Kublers last season and, after just six career starts, there’s obvious room for improvement. Good to firm suits her profile and this trip is ideal. The Spotlight notes improvement is essential, but the booking of Rodriguez and the Burrows yard firing at 20% course winners makes this a strong each-way play at 10/3 with four places at 1/5 odds.

Twisting Physics at 7/4 is the likely favourite and won at Newbury on his handicap debut last June, but the short price for a horse that has run respectably rather than brilliantly this season asks a lot. Nanino Niyati represents the value in the race.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksRiver King โ€” BetVictor Backing England To Win Handicap (2:50, Newbury)
Odds: 11/4 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 11/4 Betfred)

The handicap debut second at Windsor was laced with promise, pulling clear of the field with the winner having barely been asked a question. Back to a mile, which suits his profile, trained by a yard hitting form at 10 winners from 53 runners in the last fortnight, and facing a rival in Classic Encounter who is penalised for an easy Class 4 win. River King is the more interesting proposition at a superior level of form and 11/4 on a horse this unexposed represents genuine value on today’s card.
