Newbury, Thursday 2 July 2026: Tips and Selections

Good to firm ground at Newbury on a partly sunny afternoon sets up a sharp surface that will suit horses with a bit of zip. Three races on the card today, a pair of 2yo novice events plus a 15-runner handicap to open proceedings. The juvenile contests are the headliners, and there is a clear NAP emerging from the second of them. Tom Marquand rides on the card and his 15% strike rate at Newbury (75 wins from 497 rides, A/E 1.08) is worth keeping in mind when he lines up this afternoon.

8:00 โ€” World Cup Super Boosts At BetVictor Handicap (7f, Good To Firm)

Fifteen runners over seven furlongs and four places paid at 1/5 odds. This is a lottery at first glance, but the form angles narrow the field considerably.

Best Rate Each-Way is the pick at 13/2 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet). Richard Hannon’s yard has sent out six winners from 57 runners in the last fortnight, which is ticking over at a respectable clip, and Best Rate’s recent form reads consistently well. He went down by four lengths at Newmarket off the same mark he carries today, and that is a sound platform for a 7f handicap on good-to-firm ground. He handles this trip and surface without any question marks, the worry is simply whether he can find a bit extra at the business end. At 13/2 in a four-place market, the each-way case is solid.

Gallant is the other horse who catches the eye. Tom Marquand takes the ride for Oli Rix, and Marquand’s record at Newbury speaks for itself. Gallant posted a decent effort at Newmarket last time, goes well on a sound surface, and has course and distance experience. The tongue-tie applied for the first time could be the small nudge he needs. Worth including in any each-way multiples at 8/1.

Stratocracy deserves a mention too. Kevin and Lauren Frost have gone 3/10 in the last 14 days, a yard clearly in form, and Stratoctery went down by only three lengths at Wetherby last time from a marginally stiffer mark. The wide draw at stall 14 is the genuine concern in a 15-runner field over seven furlongs, and that keeps him to a mention only.

6:50 โ€” Gracelands EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

Fourteen two-year-old fillies, many on debut, on a quick surface. This is the sort of race where experience counts and the form of the experienced runners gives a guide.

Avalon Queen is the most straightforward selection at 11/2 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). She finished three lengths fourth on her debut at this very course, handles 6f, handles the good to firm ground, and should strip sharper for that outing. Roger Teal has gone 2/11 in the last fortnight, so the yard is not running cold. She faces a big field of mostly unexposed fillies and that debut experience at Newbury is a tangible advantage. The step forward from a promising first run is the natural next step here.

Fillipas is the other filly worth noting. She was runner-up by two and a half lengths at Bath on debut, showed enough to suggest she will improve, and the step up to 6f looks like it could suit. At 11/1 she is worth a small each-way interest, though Rod Millman’s yard has been quiet at 0/16 in the last 14 days, which tempers the enthusiasm slightly.

Marsala commands respect on debut for Ralph Beckett, whose yard has been busy and productive with eight winners from 58 runners recently. A Mehmas filly from a sharp family, she could easily run into a place on debut at 8/1, but blind faith in debut runners in a 14-runner field is hard to justify at odds shorter than the experienced Avalon Queen.

7:25 โ€” Fidelity Energy Green Future Novice Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

Eleven runners, and this one is noticeably more straightforward than the fillies’ race that precedes it. The market has identified the most likely winner clearly.

Jimtrott at 10/3 (Boyle Sports, Betfred, LiveScore Bet) is the selection. He ran with enormous promise on his debut at this track, going down by only a head in a novice at Newbury over 6f. Course-proven, trip-proven, going-proven. That run is the kind of debut that usually results in a confident step forward second time out. Eve Johnson Houghton has gone 5/25 in the last fortnight, a yard that is very much firing, and that context matters for a horse who simply needs to improve marginally on an already impressive debut. The main risk is whether he can settle a touch better when he has the benefit of experience, but the profile here is as clean as it gets in a juvenile novice.

Alaskan Bear is the clear market leader at 6/4, and the form he showed at the Curragh in a Group 3 is solid. Stepping down in grade makes him the logical favourite. At 6/4 though, the value has gone, and Jimtrott’s course form and trainer angle make the 10/3 genuinely appealing by comparison. Pride Of Toledo at 9/2 is also worth a small look given the No Nay Never sprint pedigree, but on debut the risk is priced in.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksJimtrott โ€” Fidelity Energy Green Future Novice Stakes (19:25, Newbury)
Odds: 10/3 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 10/3 Betfred, 10/3 LiveScore Bet)

Ran a head second on debut at this exact track over this exact trip on ground he handles. Course form in a 2yo novice is gold, and Eve Johnson Houghton’s yard has gone 5/25 in the last fortnight so the operation is absolutely in gear. The market leader Alaskan Bear has Group 3 form but the step down in grade has compressed his price to a point where Jimtrott at 10/3 represents the value call. A natural second-run bounce is expected, and the profile could not be much tidier.
