Newbury, Friday 17 July 2026: Tips and Selections

Three races on the Newbury card today and all three are worth dissecting carefully. With Glorious Goodwood just eleven days away, trainers are sharpening their best tools, and you can see that in the quality of some of these entries. Small fields dominate the afternoon which limits each-way opportunities, but the Listed race at 4:10 is a different story with twelve declared. Let’s get into it.

4:10 Apple Print and Creative Rose Bowl Stakes (Listed, 6f)

Twelve runners for a Listed prize over six furlongs, and this is where the card gets genuinely interesting. The favourite Nabati (7/4 Boyle Sports) carries all the hallmarks of a horse the market respects more for its connections than its form. One run, one win, stepping straight into Listed company. Charlie Appleby is firing at a remarkable 32% over the past fortnight and William Buick rarely gets on a bad horse, but the figures rank this colt toward the bottom of the field. You’re being asked to pay short odds for potential rather than proven ability at this level.

The horse I want to be on is Arapaho Gold at 6/1 (available across all three boards). Connor Beasley rides, and he is worth singling out here: a 19% strike rate at Newbury with an A/E of 1.74, which is the best number among the jockeys on today’s card by some distance. That A/E tells you he outperforms his market position at this track. The horse itself has won its last two starts, the trip is proven, and Michael Dods has had three winners from 29 runners over the past fortnight. Back-to-back wins before a Listed test is exactly the profile you see from horses who keep progressing through the summer.

A Bear Affair Each-Way at 12/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred) also deserves a line each-way. The comment rates him the pick of the field on figures, he’s placed last time out and has a win in recent starts, and the three-place terms at 1/5 in a twelve-runner field mean a place return is realistic. Sean Levey is a sharp jockey for a competitive sprint. At 12/1 you’re getting genuine value each-way.

  • Selection: Arapaho Gold, 6/1
  • Each-Way Interest: A Bear Affair Each-Way, 12/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred), 3 places at 1/5

5:20 UHY Ross Brooke Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (1m5f)

Four declared with one non-runner (Kelly Burn) leaving just three going to post. Fields this small are not each-way territory, and with the market settling around 4/5 Green Sky, this shapes up as a straight win race.

Green Sky at 4/5 (Boyle Sports/Betfred) is a fair favourite. Back-to-back wins, proven trip, and Oisin Murphy in the saddle. Rod Millman’s yard has been in decent nick with five winners from nineteen runners in the past fortnight. The only genuine query is whether seven days since her last run is tight enough for a mare heading up to 1m5f, but back-to-back wins suggest she’s in the form of her life.

Koala Rose at 5/4 (Boyle Sports/Betfred) represents the main danger. Ralph Beckett’s yard is absolutely on fire with a 30% strike rate over the last fortnight, which is a serious number for any stable. Three straight top-three finishes shows consistent quality, and Rossa Ryan knows how to ride a front-runner or sit off a pace. In a three-runner race, a horse with that level of placed consistency and that trainer form angle is not to be dismissed lightly.

With only three runners, I am siding with Koala Rose to cause a minor upset. Beckett’s current form is the kind of stat that wins you money, and 5/4 about a filly with a 100% top-three record in recent starts looks reasonable given the alternatives.

  • Selection: Koala Rose, 5/4 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)

5:55 Crossland Employment Solicitors Handicap Stakes (1m3f)

Five runners over a mile and three furlongs, and this race is more competitive than the small field suggests. Devil’s Peak at 2/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred) is the one everyone will be looking at: John and Thady Gosden have sent out seven winners from just sixteen runners in the past fortnight, which is an extraordinary hit rate, and William Buick is on board. The concern is five consecutive starts without winning and a fifth last time out after a 35-day break. Consistent placed runs are admirable but at 2/1 you need more than admirable.

The angle I prefer here is Turty Tree at 6/4 (Boyle Sports/Betfred). A winner last time out, progressive sequence of placed efforts before that, and Oisin Murphy in the saddle. The trip is proven, and a 34-day break after a winning run often means a horse returns in peak condition rather than over-worked. Andrew Balding has had eleven winners from fifty-five runners in the past fortnight, a solid 20% strike rate. At 6/4 in a five-runner field, this is a horse coming here on the back of a win with a respected jockey and a yard that is consistently placing their horses to succeed.

Nap Hand at 11/2 is the progressive dark horse: a third last time out having started the sequence with a seventh, trending upward, and the Chris Gordon yard is a trainer who does well with improving horses under the radar. Worth noting as a small each-way interest, but with only two places on offer in a five-runner field the risk-reward is marginal.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksArapaho Gold โ€” Apple Print and Creative Rose Bowl Stakes (4:10, Newbury)
Odds: 6/1 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 6/1 Betfred, 6/1 LiveScore Bet)

Two wins from two starts, the trip is proven, and Connor Beasley’s course record at Newbury (19% wins, A/E 1.74) is the standout jockey stat on the card. Michael Dods has had a productive fortnight, and a progressive two-year-old on a winning streak stepping into Listed company carries genuine upside at 6/1. The market is too focused on Appleby’s unproven one-race wonder at 7/4: back the form horse at a real price.
