Good to firm ground at Newbury on a warm July Thursday. Three races on the card worth getting stuck into, and the ground suits quick, athletic types throughout. With Glorious Goodwood less than a week away, trainers are running horses in form and yards that are firing should be noted. The Gosdens in particular have been in exceptional shape lately, and that matters enormously in the opening event.

This is a straightforward novice on paper, but the context around Lorraine makes her almost impossible to oppose. That is a yard absolutely flying, and Robert Havlin rides with purpose when the stable has a filly it fancies. Lorraine is a debutante here, but Gosden juveniles on debut at Newbury on good to firm ground have a strong record, and this 6½f trip looks tailored for a scopey filly by a stamina-influenced sire.

The market agrees, but 10/11 reflects confidence rather than hype. Clive Cox’s Art Of Life ran sixth on debut and represents the main danger at 3/1, but Cox’s yard is only 3 from 23 in the last fortnight. That is a stable in form at a track it knows extremely well.

The form reads 2401, which tells you this colt has genuine ability, has won already, and went to post most recently over a trip likely shorter than his best. Two consecutive thirds followed by a win last time out on similar ground tells you she is improving, holding her form, and has the confidence of recent success behind her.

Kieran Shoemark takes the ride and he rides Newbury well. Six furlongs on quick ground suits a filly who has shown she travels with speed rather than needing a strong gallop to get into the race. At 7/4, the win chance is fair value given the in-form yard, and the each-way terms protect you nicely in a ten-runner field.

Silver Wraith at 6/1 is interesting for each-way purposes given she has a win on her record and Emma Lavelle’s runner could outrun that price. Eightthreeone at 8/1 for Eve Johnson Houghton, whose yard has been in outstanding form (7 from 28), is a genuine each-way saver if you want the bigger price.
