Three contests stand out as punting opportunities today, with a Group 2 sprint, a Group 3 staying test, and a competitive handicap over seven furlongs all offering genuine angles. The York Ebor Festival is just three days away, but Newbury today has plenty of quality in its own right, and the going is absolutely ideal for horses who want quick ground.

Key trainer stats to flag before we dive in: Charlie Appleby is running at 25% at this course historically, and his last 14 days show 10 wins from 24 runners. Tom Clover hits 18% at Newbury with an A/E of 1.35, meaning his winners deliver above-expectation value. Both are worth following closely today.

1:25 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Group 3, 1m5½f)

Six runners in this staying Group 3 and the form angle points clearly to one horse: Dubai Honour (Tom Marquand, William Haggas). The 7/4 favourite is obviously short for a race of this type, but the data backs him up. Rated 119, he is the class horse in the field, and his recent form of 212-24 shows a model performer who keeps showing up in the right places. Haggas hits 20% at Newbury with an A/E of 0.99, and Marquand has an A/E of 1.05 here, meaning punters are broadly getting fair value when this partnership fires.

The 126-day absence is the one question, but Haggas is meticulous about producing horses fit first time out after a break, and the trip and going suit perfectly. At 7/4 this is not a bet for value hunters, but Dubai Honour is the form pick.

The each-way angle in this race belongs to Tabletalk Each-Way at 10/3 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Trained by Tom Clover, whose Newbury A/E of 1.35 is the best of any trainer on this card, and ridden by Saffie Osborne, this five-year-old has been relentlessly consistent, finishing second in four of his last five starts. He has the trip and going dialled in from previous runs, and his rating of 116 puts him right in the mix. The concern is he cannot quite win at this level, but in a six-runner Group 3 with two place terms at 1/4 odds, backing a horse who finishes second four times out of five is not a bad game to play. At 10/3 he represents genuine each-way value given the Clover yard is firing and the horse’s consistency is undeniable.

2:35 TPT Fire Handicap Stakes (7f, Handicap)

Eight runners and a wide-open handicap over seven furlongs. The market has this as a two-horse race between Great Acclaim at 4/1 and Scoville at 9/4, but there are reservations about both.

Great Acclaim is top-rated and carries 142lbs, but his last two outings brought a ninth and an eighth. That form is difficult to ignore, however fit he arrives. Scoville under Tom Marquand is on a workable mark of 96, but he is also winless in his last five and that recent run of 04-870 does not inspire confidence at short odds.

The selection here is Stellar Sunrise Each-Way at 7/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Andrew Balding runs at 10 winners from 54 runners over the last 14 days and this three-year-old carries a lighter weight of 135lbs from stall five. He won four starts back and grabbed a third three starts back on a mark of 100. The unplaced effort last time out is a concern, but three-year-olds carrying a weight allowance in an eight-runner handicap at this price deserve respect, and Balding’s yard is in form. The going suits and the distance fits his profile. At 7/1 with three places on offer at 1/5 odds, this is a proper each-way shout.

If you want a secondary bet, keep an eye on Addison Grey at 11/2 (Boyle Sports). Two runner-up finishes and a third in his last five, trained by Clive Cox who has shown 3 winners from 18 runners in the past fortnight. He is not finishing last in these sorts of races and the place terms make him interesting each-way as well.

3:10 Hungerford Stakes (Group 2, 7f)

The feature race on the card and the one attracting the most interest. Nine runners at Group 2 level and three horses with genuine winning claims.

Symbol Of Honour is the selection at 5/1 (Boyle Sports, Betfred). Trained by Charlie Appleby, who runs at 25% at Newbury and whose yard has posted 10 wins from just 24 runners in the last 14 days, this four-year-old gelding arrives on the back of a win last time out. A 28-day freshener looks ideal, he has experience over both today’s trip and going, and William Buick takes the ride from stall one. Buick hits 16% at Newbury, and while his A/E of 0.92 suggests slight market underperformance, this is a horse whose form figures of 8-5831 show an upward trajectory finishing with a win. Appleby’s operation is one of the most efficient in training at this course and Symbol Of Honour looks ahead of the handicapper right now. The 134lbs burden is shared by most rivals, so that is not a meaningful disadvantage here.

Witness Stand at 13/2 is the one they all have to beat on ratings, but he is yet to score in his last five and his form figures of -08263 show too much inconsistency for a horse at this level. Coppull at 4/1 is interesting for Clive Cox but his last two starts brought a fourth and an eighth after winning three starts back, suggesting he may need to find more at Group 2 level.

Extremely Zain at 9/2 has won three of his last four starts for William Haggas, and Tom Marquand picks up the ride. Three-year-olds with a 3lbs weight advantage can spring upsets in these races, but being ranked bottom of the field on the figures is a red flag at this level. Watch with interest but Symbol Of Honour is the bet.
