Newcastle (AW) Tips: Monday 20 April 2026
A seven-race all-weather card at Newcastle on standard going. Nothing here that demands huge staking but there are angles worth playing, particularly in the opener and the 1m fillies' maiden. The handicap is messy and wide open, which is exactly where you need to be selective rather than forcing a pick.

This comes down to a straight head-to-head between two horses with proper form to their name. Nebulon (9/4, Bet365) is the one to be on. Michael Bell's yard has been in decent nick over the past fortnight, striking at 3/14, and Rowan Scott takes the ride on a colt who has done nothing wrong in his two starts. He was a green sixth on debut at Windsor last June, then came back to Wolverhampton over this same 6f trip last month and shaped like a winner waiting to happen when runner-up. The gelding in the field who has been placed on all five starts is Gouken, and he will run his race, but Nebulon looks the more progressive profile and the form he showed at Wolves reads well for a standard Newcastle surface. Bell, Wolverhampton form, improving 3yo. The angle is clear.
Kilfrush Desert (7/2, William Hill) is interesting as a market pointer if punters back her on the morning of the race. She showed promise at Beverley last April and Kevin Stott takes the ride, but a year off and an AW debut makes her harder to trust in a win-only context at these odds.
Selection: Nebulon, 9/4 Bet365. Win only.

Bintaziza (11/4, Bet365) is Roger Varian's representative and commands serious respect on debut. Varian knows how to place a debutante to win and the yard has been ticking over at 2/14 in the past fortnight. The market is telling a story here, with Bintaziza and Astrid dominating the betting. On pedigree, Astrid has plenty to attract attention, closely related to a pair of French Listed-class horses, but debut runners at 9/2 in a race where Varian is already pitching a well-priced alternative deserve caution.
Clocker Each-Way (7/1, Bet365) is the each-way play in a 12-runner field. Edward Bethell's yard is flying right now, 7 winners from 23 runners in the last 14 days, and that is a yard-in-form stat you cannot ignore. Clocker ran encouragingly at Musselburgh last time, finishing close at 7f on soft ground and travelling well off the pace before the trip just ran out. Stepping back up to a mile should suit, and if Bethell has her freshened and ready, she can pick up the pieces if the well-bred debutantes need the run. Three places at 1/5 the odds with 12 runners is a fair each-way proposition at 7/1.
Win selection: Bintaziza, 11/4 Bet365. Each-way: Clocker, 7/1 Bet365.
8:30 โ Free Race Replays On attheraces.com Handicap (1m, Standard, 14 runners)
The most competitive race on the card and frankly one of the trickiest handicaps you will see on a Monday night. Fourteen runners, form that flips around, and a field full of horses with question marks. The honest take: swerve or play small each-way.
Teggy Lasso Each-Way (9/2, Bet365) is shortlisted by the form book for good reason. Ivan Furtado's yard has four winners from 23 runners in the past fortnight, making this a stable in decent nick, and Teggy Lasso ran a proper race over the course and distance just last Monday. He led and only gave way by two lengths, which in a 14-runner handicap counts as competitive form. He remains a maiden after seven attempts but his AW course form is his best asset. Jason Hart, who has the book on Furtado's string, takes the ride again. Four places at 1/5 in a 14-runner handicap is where the value sits at this price.
Trais Fluors at 12/1 (William Hill) is not dismissible. Twelve years old, can miss the break, but has five wins at Newcastle including over this course and distance in January. He is 1lb lower than when he last won and will get a good tow into the race from the front-runners. Put him in the each-way exotics if you are playing around.
Selection: Teggy Lasso, each-way at 9/2 Bet365.
Today's NAP
Odds: 9/4 โ Bet365 (others: 9/4 William Hill, 3.15 Betfair Exchange)
Michael Bell's yard has been firing in the last fortnight and Nebulon showed exactly the right profile at Wolverhampton last month: shaped like a winner, failed to get there, is now sharper for the experience. He handles AW surfaces, Rowan Scott is a solid booking, and the 6f Newcastle standard trip matches his placed form perfectly. At 9/4 in a maiden this small in field, you are getting fair value on the most logical winner on the card. Win only.
