Newcastle (AW) Tips: Tuesday 2 June 2026

A six-race card at Newcastle under the lights on a Tuesday evening in early June. Standard going on the Tapeta with light rain drifting in from the north, which shouldn’t alter much. Three races featured below, with Conor Whiteley and George Bass both carrying strong course numbers at this track and worth noting when they appear on the racecard. The Epsom Derby is four days away, so the serious flat money is pointing south right now, which can create opportunities in these northern handicaps when value gets left on the shelf.

8:15 โ€” Penny Car Washes Handicap (1m, Standard, Class 5)

Selection: Military Leader (5/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

The case for Military Leader is about as straightforward as it gets on an evening card. Rowan Scott takes the ride and this horse arrives on the back of back-to-back wins at Southwell and Thirsk, both over a mile. Yes, he has climbed 10lb in the handicap for those victories, with 3lb added since Thirsk, but the key detail is what he did in December: he chased home Aisling Oscar over this exact course and distance, working hard on a mark that was arguably stiffer in context than what he faces tonight. He knows Newcastle, handles Tapeta, and Phil Makin’s yard is showing a 1/7 return across the last fortnight, which is modest volume but a live runner when the strike rate punches in.

Quiet Resolve is the main danger. The Hamilton win last month was a big-priced eyecatcher and the form has substance behind it, but he is 1lb lower rather than enjoying a significant drop, and while his AW form figures (311224) are tidy, this is a step up in class from Hamilton. At 13/2, he fills the each-way slot if you want cover.

Barry’s Boy at 7/2 is solid but beat nothing extraordinary in his last Newcastle win, and the Nottingham run where he hung left under pressure gives you reason to pause. George Bass has a 21% strike rate and 1.45 A/E at Newcastle, which is genuinely strong, but the price is a touch short for a horse with a question mark.

Military Leader at 5/2 for a hat-trick attempt over a track and trip he demonstrably handles. Take it.

8:45 โ€” Penny Hotels Handicap (1m, Standard, Class 6, 14 runners)

Selection: First Encounter Each-Way (15/2, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

The critical number here is Conor Whiteley’s Newcastle course record: 27% wins from 15 rides, A/E of 1.46. That is elite-level course form for a conditional, and when Whiteley gets booked for a yard that doesn’t have a hot recent record, it usually means the horse itself is the reason he is there. John Gallagher sends First Encounter here for a first crack at the track, and the horse arrives with proper evidence of form: won classified contests at Wolverhampton and Lingfield earlier this year, both around a mile, and was only sixth at Wolverhampton two months ago without being beaten out of sight. The AW record is what this horse knows, and he is stepping back onto a surface he goes well on.

At 15/2 in a 14-runner handicap with four places paid at 1/5 odds, the each-way return is attractive. This is exactly the race type where Whiteley’s booking becomes meaningful.

Wicklow Way at 4/1 is the obvious market leader angle. Won over this C&D in March at 7/1 when the form has franked nicely since, and Garritty is 1 from 2 on him, which the Spotlight flags. The Nottingham blowout and Wolverhampton draw are negatives, but he is right in the mix. Barleybrown has four C&D wins from last season and Ruth Carr keeps plugging away, but the form since that January third has been poor. Penny Mountain tackles a mile for the first time here having been in the frame at 7f on this track, which is an unknown.

First Encounter each-way at 15/2. Whiteley is the deciding factor.

6:15 โ€” Living North Magazines Classified Stakes (1m2f, Standard, Class 6)

Selection: Lawmans Blis (3/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred / LiveScore Bet)

Classified stakes are often won by the horse carrying the most recent momentum, and Lawmans Blis has that in abundance. His Catterick win last month was harder to achieve than the bare result suggests: he lost significant ground when hampered around the halfway point, then picked up and got up late to win a 14-runner handicap. That is a horse running well within himself. Wind surgery has clearly done its job, this being only his second start since the operation. Joey Ramsden has a 2/12 recent strike rate over the last 14 days, which is a modest yard by northern standards but ticking over.

Gemini Man is the other 3/1 shot and can’t be dismissed. He won at Wolverhampton in February and has course form, but the pulled-up effort over hurdles at Hexham 24 days ago is a red flag coming into a race like this. That is not a horse peaking right now.

Heartened ran third at Redcar eight days ago without a clear run, showed a C&D win on her CV from September, and at 11/2 with a claim on board represents value if the Redcar form holds. She fills the place slip if you want a saver.

Lawmans Blis at 3/1. The Catterick run was the real thing, and this is a drop to classified company off the back of it.

Today’s NAP

Jockey silksMilitary Leader โ€” Penny Car Washes Handicap (8:15, Newcastle AW)
Odds: 5/2 โ€” Boyle Sports (others: 5/2 Betfred, 5/2 LiveScore Bet)

Two wins on the spin at Southwell and Thirsk, both over a mile, and a December run over this exact course and distance that showed he handles Tapeta at Newcastle comfortably. The 10lb rise over two wins is the only hesitation, but the class of opposition tonight does not demand a step beyond what he has already demonstrated. Rowan Scott knows the track, Phil Makin’s yard lands its shots when the horse is right, and at 5/2 you are getting fair money on a horse that is bang in form and course proven. Straightforward NAP on a Tuesday evening card.
