That rewards horses who travel well through their race and don’t need deep ground to show their best. The card is light in numbers but carries some genuine angles, particularly around horses rated well above their official marks and trainers firing hard in the past fortnight.

Worth flagging for the weekend ahead: Glorious Goodwood is just 11 days out, and several of today’s runners will be using this as a final prep. That context matters when reading fitness and intent from connections.

In a four-runner handicap over a mile and four furlongs, that kind of figure discrepancy doesn’t come along often and it’s the number that jumps off the page.

He’s placed twice in his last five starts, including a runner-up effort two races back, and the fourth last time out was respectable rather than alarming. George Wood takes the ride and the trip suits. Trainer Dylan Cunha hasn’t had the best fortnight with a 0/13 record over 14 days, which is the one note of caution, but the handicapper may simply have left Patrol in at a mark he can exploit. At 9/2 in a field of four, this is the value play on the card.

Cranachan at 11/4 is the main danger. Ralph Beckett’s yard is running at 30% in the last fortnight, a yard in form by any measure, and Hector Crouch is a consistent performer here at Newmarket’s July course with a 20% strike rate and A/E of 1.29. Cranachan won two starts back and was only denied narrowly in second three starts ago. He’ll be ridden positively and could pinch it if Patrol’s form doesn’t translate on the day.

High Degree is the market leader here and deserves his position as top-rated, but 5/4 in a handicap offers almost no value whatsoever. Look down the card and Way Of Life at 14/1 stands out as the each-way play with genuine substance behind it.

Jonathan Portman’s eight-year-old won last time out and has three victories in his last five starts. That’s the form of a horse at the top of his game. Yes, he’s had 81 days off since that last success, which is the obvious query, but horses who win with that kind of regularity don’t tend to forget how to race after a summer break. He’s proven over the mile and two furlongs trip, and Olivia Tubb’s five-pound claim brings his weight down to a workable level.

At 14/1 with two places paid at 1/4 odds, you’re backing a horse with three wins from five recent starts at a price that suggests the market has leaned heavily on the layoff. That’s where the each-way value lives.

Al Aali is interesting for those who like a figure play: 98 rated against an official mark of 88 with Billy Loughnane in the saddle, who hits 17% here at the July course. But six runs without a win is a red flag until proven otherwise.

Rose Of Honour is the form pick at 11/4 and the comment data backs that up clearly. But three places at 1/5 odds in an eight-runner field is modest each-way value at that price. The smarter play here sits wider in the market.

Angel Shared with Dougie Costello aboard is the angle. Our rating of 89 sits eight pounds above her official mark of 78, which is a meaningful gap in a fillies’ handicap. Costello hits 17% at this course with an A/E of 1.31, making him one of the sharpest jockey bookings on the card today. Steph Hollinshead, who trains her, is the standout course trainer in the data: 22% winners at Newmarket’s July meeting with an A/E of 1.56, the highest on the board. That combination of an overrated figure, a live jockey, and a yard that thrives at this exact venue is a proper each-way case at 7/1.

The form reads -75306 which is nothing to write home about, but a third three starts back shows she can get competitive, and the rating gap suggests the handicapper’s mark is flattering her opponents more than it should be.

Lady Kodiac at 4/1 is the biggest danger. Our rating of 92 is seven pounds clear of her official mark of 85, and she was second last time. James Tate’s yard isn’t firing (1/14 over the last fortnight) but the horse’s own form is solid enough to make her dangerous.
