Newmarket (July) Tips: Saturday 1 August 2026
Good to firm ground at Headquarters on a sunny August Saturday. Newmarket’s July course rewards horses that handle quick ground and finish strongly up that relentless rise to the line. Charlie Appleby continues his stranglehold on this track at 28% winners, and with Billy Loughnane and Rhys Clutterbuck both showing profitable figures here, the jockey angles are worth leaning into today. Three races stand out for punters with an opinion.
1:33 โ British Stallion Studs EBF Chalice Stakes (Listed, 1m4f)
Selection: Revoir (4/1, Boyle Sports)
The form figures say it plainly: Revoir is rated 112 on our figures, ahead of every other runner in this nine-mare Listed heat. Back-to-back seconds tell you she is in solid nick and ready to go, she handles this trip and good-to-firm ground without any reservation, and a 14-day fresher should leave her spot-on. Ralph Beckett has won 15% of his Newmarket July runners historically, and Rhys Clutterbuck carries a profitable A/E of 1.27 at this track. That combination of top-rated horse, in-form pilot, and proven conditions is hard to dismiss.
The obvious concern is the five-race losing run, and in a Listed heat you need to convert. But rated above Orionis (William Haggas, 9/2) and Miss Justice (15/2), who both carry similar questions around recent winning form, Revoir commands the market for a reason. The 4/1 looks fair rather than generous, but it is the right side of the line for a confident each-way play at three places.
Romantic Symphony at 11/8 is Charlie Appleby’s runner and Billy Loughnane rides, so the yard stats and jockey stats both point her way. The issue is a rating of 95, which sits well below Revoir’s 112, and a 44-day absence stepping into Listed company. She is the jolly, but the value clearly sits elsewhere.
2:13 โ British Stallion Studs EBF Fillies’ Nursery Handicap (6f, 9 runners)
Selection: Glamorize Each-Way (4/1, Boyle Sports / 7/2, LiveScore Bet)
Nursery handicaps at Newmarket in August are full of progressive types, and Glamorize ticks every box you want to see. Back-to-back wins, experience of six furlongs on good-to-firm, and trainer George Scott striking at a tremendous 33% in the last 14 days. Billy Loughnane picks up the ride, and his 19% strike rate at this track with a positive A/E of 0.9 is encouraging. She carries 131lb from stall eight, which is the slight negative, but the weight is manageable and the draw is not a dealbreaker over six at this venue.
Havana Sprite (7/2) is the obvious rival, with back-to-back wins and a low draw in stall one. James Tate’s 1/13 fortnight figure is quiet though, and 37 days off gives mild pause. Love A Giggle (4/1) had two wins before an unplaced effort and carries top weight. Glamorize at 7/2 with LiveScore Bet is the pick, and with nine runners over six furlongs in a handicap, the each-way terms at three places and 1/5 odds make sense at this price.
3:58 โ Racing Welfare Handicap (1m4f, 8 runners)
Selection: Way Of Life Each-Way (8/1, Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet)
Divine Knight is the 6/4 favourite off two consecutive thirds for William Haggas, but five without a win and top weight at 130lb in a competitive staying handicap makes that a short price to take. The value in this race is Way Of Life at 8/1.
Jonathan Portman’s eight-year-old brings a form line of 1-1313 that screams consistent, reliable performer. A winner two starts back, third last time, and 15 days between runs suggests he arrives fresh and fit. He handles the distance and good-to-firm, and at 135lb alongside Divine Knight he carries no penalty disadvantage. The trainer has hit 3/14 in the last fortnight at 21%, which is solid for a smaller yard. At 8/1 against a market leader who keeps threatening without delivering, this is a proper each-way angle at three places.
Almekarem (9/2 into 4/1) won last time for Sir Mark Prescott, who is always dangerous at Newmarket, and the yard is firing at 7/23 over 14 days. He is the main danger if the handicapper has not caught up with him, but the speed figure lags and we are taking the bigger price.
Today’s NAP
Odds: 4/1 โ Boyle Sports (others: 5/1 Betfred, 9/2 LiveScore Bet)
Top-rated in the field on our figures at 112, handles this trip and good-to-firm without a flicker of doubt, and arrives fresh off two placed efforts that show the form is live. Rhys Clutterbuck’s A/E of 1.27 at Newmarket July is the profitable angle that tips this from selection to NAP. Ralph Beckett knows Listed company and 4/1 beats backing an Appleby jolly who is 17lb higher in our ratings.
