A compact six-race card at Newmarket’s July Course on good to firm ground, and the conditions suit the speedier, fitter types across the board. Three races stand out for punters looking for genuine angles rather than laying the odds-on banker and calling it a day. Charlie Appleby dominates the novice, James Owen’s yard is absolutely flying with 12 winners from 57 runners in the past fortnight, and the handicap over two miles is a fascinating puzzle. The York Ebor Festival is less than two weeks away, which means trainers are sharpening their ammunition right now, and yards with hot form deserve serious respect.

Five runners, two miles, and a race that splits cleanly once you factor in the trainer form. High Fibre is the 7/4 market leader for James Owen, and the yard’s 14-day numbers are excellent. Owen has sent out 12 winners from 57 runners recently, an A/E of well above expectation, and that kind of strike rate at a place like Newmarket tells you the horses are trained and ready. Cieren Fallon in the saddle adds to the appeal. High Fibre’s third last time out proves the ability is still there at seven, and good to firm is precisely the surface he wants.

The danger is Minhad at 7/2. Won three starts back, kept honest with a fourth most recently, and 142 lb off a 34-day break is the profile of a horse whose trainer has had time to get him spot on. The concern is the trainer combination of Ismail Mohammed and Jose Santos, who have gone 0 from 6 in the past fortnight. That cold spell counts against him.

Selection: High Fibre (7/4, Boyle Sports). Owen’s yard is too hot to oppose, Fallon knows his way around this course, and the third last time out reads better than the overall record suggests.

3:30 — Knight Frank Woodbridge EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)

Seven two-year-olds, six furlongs on fast ground, and a market dominated by two horses. Fast Performer for William Haggas goes off at 6/5, having finished second on debut. Haggas is in good nick with 10 winners from 50 over the fortnight, and a second from one run is a solid starting point.

The value, though, sits with Crown And Two at 13/8 for Tom Clover and Billy Loughnane. Clover’s course record at Newmarket’s July track is genuinely strong: 18% win rate and an A/E of 1.27, meaning his horses run above market expectations here. Loughnane himself hits 21% at this track. That is two separate statistical edges stacking up in favour of one runner. In a race where several have no form at all, a yard and jockey combination this dialled in to the course commands respect. The 13/8 is a fair price rather than a giveaway, but it is still ahead of the market leader on a form-free basis and offers better each-way terms for the cautious.

Selection: Crown And Two (13/8, Boyle Sports/Betfred). Clover at this track is a legitimate angle, Loughnane is a consistent performer here, and 13/8 for a yard with a 1.27 A/E at the venue represents tangible value over the odds-on favourite.

4:00 — Knight Frank Cambridge Connections Novice Stakes (7f, Good To Firm)

Four runners, and one of them is 1/25. Cerro Blanco for Charlie Appleby has won once and finished second once, and at those prices there is nothing to discuss in terms of bets. Appleby hits 28% at this track with an A/E of 1.01, which is solid, and Billy Loughnane partners him. This race is a formality on paper.

The only interest commercially is Nothing But Love at 11/1. The form reads 54, connections are quiet, and a trainer record of 0 from 0 in 14 days gives you nothing to go on. At those odds in a four-runner field she needs to beat 100/1 shots and an 11/1 co-rival, but the Cerro Blanco price makes this race a no-bet for any punter looking for value. Back the favourite if you must in an accumulator; otherwise, move on.
