Good to firm ground at Newmarket’s July Course on Friday, and the Rowley Mile’s summer sibling serves up three races worth getting stuck into. The going suits horses with a bit of zip, and on this sharp, fair track, class and recent form tend to be rewarded. No festival pomp here, just solid handicapping and some interesting novice contests to unpick.

7:37 — Racing TV Handicap Stakes (1m, Good To Firm)

Selection: Hickory (7/2, Boyle Sports / LiveScore Bet)

In a ten-runner mile handicap, this is a race where backing a horse that actually won last time out feels refreshing rather than obvious. Hickory arrives on the back of a victory and his handler Jamie Osborne has sent out two winners from 12 runners in the last fortnight, which is a yard ticking over rather than a cold stable. The eight-year-old knows this trip and handles good to firm ground, which counts for plenty on a day when the conditions will stretch horses who lack the engine for a fast surface.

The inconsistency charge is fair. Four defeats from five before last time’s win is a genuine concern, but the flipside is that when Hickory clicks, he clearly still has the ability to land these sorts of contests. He lines up at a price that reflects his age and patchy record rather than the form that matters most, which is the latest.

Of the others, Croupier merits respect. Third last time out, experienced over the trip and going, and 5/1 represents fair value each-way. But the win record is the issue and the yard combination of Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith has drawn a blank from their last three runners.

Tom Clover’s God Of War is interesting given Clover’s 19% strike rate at this course (A/E of 1.31 tells you those wins come at rewarding prices), but 100 days off the track is too big a question mark in a competitive handicap. Come back when he’s had a prep run.

5:53 — Zyn Strong Stride EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (1m, Good To Firm)

Selection: Date Line (4/1, Boyle Sports / Betfred)

Three runners, and the market is dominated by Gilding The Lily at 4/11 for the Gosden yard. John and Thady Gosden are always respected at this track but their A/E of 0.88 at Newmarket July is a quiet reminder that favourites here do not always pay their way. Gilding The Lily has run once, finishing second, and there is a lot of price compression around a horse with a single outing on the clock.

Date Line is the value play. Charlie Johnston’s filly has form figures of 2-1 from two starts, so she has already won at this level and knows how to finish. Johnston has hit six winners from 43 runners over the past fortnight, a consistent yard in good nick. Against an odds-on shot with a single run under her belt, the 4/1 available for a filly who has actually tasted victory looks worth taking.

Evening Call for Haggas at 5/1 is the unknown quantity with no visible form, but William Haggas rarely runs a two-year-old without purpose and she deserves a watching brief in running.

5:18 — Zyn Frontrunner EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (7f, Good To Firm)

Selection: Cool King Each-Way (11/2, Boyle Sports / 5/1 LiveScore Bet)

Twelve runners, three places, and a wide-open juvenile novice over seven furlongs. In these races the horse with existing form figures is automatically interesting, and Cool King has already shown he can mix it with the better sorts, posting a third and a seventh from two starts. The Botti yard has sent out two winners from 16 runners in the last fortnight, suggesting the horses are in fair shape.

At 11/2 with 3 places at 1/5 odds in a 12-runner field, the each-way case is compelling. Most of the field are debutants with no visible form, and experience over seven furlongs on a fast surface is a meaningful edge in a contest like this.

Reborn for Andrew Balding is respected. Balding’s yard is in excellent order with eight wins from 56 runners over the past fortnight, and Rob Hornby is a polished pilot. But the 9/2 is a short price for a first-time runner and punters taking that price need to trust entirely on homework.

Sontsivka catches the eye at 11/1 with Connor Planas aboard. Planas posts a 17% strike rate at this course with an A/E of 1.31, which is exactly the kind of stat that suggests his mounts at Newmarket July are landing at rewarding prices. Hugo Palmer’s yard has been quiet (one winner from 34 in the past fortnight) so the market has likely underestimated this runner on the jockey angle alone. Worth a small each-way interest as an outsider play.

Gilding The Lily will be a lot of people’s selection by default, but odds-on novices with one run behind them are not automatic banker material at this track.
