Newmarket (July) Tips: Saturday 15 August 2026
Good to firm ground at Headquarters on a sunny August Saturday. With the York Ebor Festival kicking off in just three days, plenty of trainers will be holding their big guns back for the Knavesmire, which makes today’s Newmarket card an interesting puzzle. Smaller fields, exposed horses, and a couple of genuine value opportunities for those willing to look beyond the obvious market leaders.
Billy Loughnane is worth following around here all day. His 24% strike rate at Newmarket’s July course from 118 rides is elite-level, and he partners live chances in two of the three featured races. Ralph Beckett is also in decent form with seven winners from 34 runners over the last 14 days. Both angles are worth factoring into your thinking.
2:10 โ Betway Grey Horse Handicap Stakes (6f, Good To Firm)
Ten runners over six furlongs on fast ground. This is a competitive enough sprint handicap and the one that catches the eye is Archduke Ferdinand at 11/2 with Boyle Sports or Betfred.
Seb Spencer’s seven-year-old came home a clear winner last time out and arrives here on a sharp 17-day turnaround, suggesting the yard is happy with how he’s come out of that run. Yes, his form before that victory was patchy, but horses who win off a purple patch are worth following next time until proven otherwise, and the market hasn’t fully punished him for his age. Good to firm suits, he has the trip experience, and he’s drawn in a workable stall.
Havana Blue at 5/2 is hard to dismiss given his three consecutive seconds, but there’s a reason he keeps finding one better, and backing a horse to finally break that pattern at odds-on territory isn’t compelling. Loughnane on Strike Each-Way at 11/2 is the other consideration. The eight-year-old won last time out and Billy Loughnane on his best Newmarket July form is always worth a second look. The 37-day absence is the query but he has course and distance experience and the each-way terms across three places at 1/5 offer a safety net.
Selection: Archduke Ferdinand at 11/2 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)
2:43 โ Betway Fillies’ Handicap Stakes (1m6f, Good To Firm)
Six fillies over a mile and six furlongs on quick ground, with only two places paid each-way. The market leader Reem Rak at 5/2 deserves respect. Roger Varian’s filly won last time out, has placed form before that, and handles today’s trip and going. The 50-day absence is the one query but Varian is precise with his horses and rarely runs one cold when it matters.
The selection, though, is Alma Latina at 11/4 with Boyle Sports and Betfred. Ralph Beckett has seven winners from 34 runners over the last fortnight, a yard clearly in form, and Billy Loughnane takes the mount. Put those two together at Newmarket’s July course and you have a powerful combination. The filly won three starts ago and has posted back-to-back thirds since, keeping her sharp and competitive without burning her out. She’s raced over this trip and going, she’s well drawn, and at 126 lb she’s the lightest of the senior fillies in the field. The value over Reem Rak is marginal in terms of price but Beckett and Loughnane’s combined record here makes this the smarter side of the argument.
Selection: Alma Latina at 11/4 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)
3:13 โ Betway Fillies’ Nursery Handicap Stakes (7f, Good To Firm)
Five two-year-old fillies over seven furlongs and this looks fairly straightforward, though the favourite isn’t necessarily the most appealing bet at the price.
Eabha at 10/11 is the punters’ choice and she deserves to be. Back-to-back wins for Eve Johnson Houghton, handles this trip and going, and Billy Loughnane again in the saddle. She’s clearly progressive and the form book points firmly in her direction. At odds-on in a five-runner nursery, she’s just not the kind of price this column gets excited about.
Fire Thunder Each-Way at 4/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred) is the more interesting proposition. Marco Botti has three from 15 over the last fortnight, which is a respectable conversion rate, and this filly has won two starts ago with two runner-up finishes either side of it. Her latest fifth might look concerning but a single poor run after a run of placed efforts doesn’t define a horse, and 118 lb is a generous weight at this level. Drawn in stall one on fast ground over seven furlongs gives her the rail and an uncomplicated route through. If Eabha underperforms for any reason, Fire Thunder looks the most likely beneficiary at a price worth having each-way.
Selection: Fire Thunder each-way at 4/1 (Boyle Sports/Betfred)
Today’s NAP
Odds: 11/4 โ Boyle Sports (others: 11/4 Betfred, 11/4 LiveScore Bet)
Ralph Beckett’s in-form yard, Billy Loughnane’s outstanding 24% strike rate at this course, and a filly who has been competitive in every recent start combine to make this the most compelling angle on the card. Alma Latina gets in light at 126 lb, has the trip and going dialled in, and represents a yard running at seven from 34 over the past fortnight. The combination of trainer form, jockey course stats, and a horse who keeps hitting the frame makes 11/4 look fair value in a small field.
