Newmarket, Tuesday 14 April 2026: Tips and Best Bets
Good ground at Headquarters on a seven-race card that includes a fascinating conditions stakes with a potential Guineas contender, a competitive 5f handicap sprint, and a solid mile handicap to round out the afternoon. Charlie Appleby's yard has been in excellent form over the past fortnight (5 from 11), and that stat matters here. Andrew Balding is ticking along nicely too at 7 from 35. Let's get into it.
2:25 Federation Of Bloodstock Agents EBF Conditions Stakes (7f)
Selection: Talk Of New York (8/13, William Hill / Bet Victor)
William Buick picks this one over stablemate Maximized and that tells you everything. Talk Of New York won nicely at Kempton before running a creditable third in a Meydan Listed contest, where his main issue was pulling hard in the early stages. The application of a hood today addresses that directly, and the drop back to 7 furlongs should help him settle far better than he did in the mile races.
The Appleby yard is firing with 5 from 11 in the last 14 days. A horse with a 2,000 Guineas entry, Buick in the saddle, and a trainer in the form of his life. Odds-on, yes, but the case is solid. The main danger is Richie's Beckett, who shaped well at Lingfield on return despite a tardy start, and remains open to progress. But the Appleby machine gets the nod here.
3:35 Betway 4 To Win Handicap (5f)
Selection: Regal Envoy (9/2, Bet365 / Coral)
This is the race that rewards course specialists, and Regal Envoy won this exact race 12 months ago on good ground at this course and distance. He is now 5lb lower than when he last won, his form tailed off later in the season but that is a familiar pattern for him, and the Spotlight note makes the point clearly: he came up trumps last April having seemingly needed his reappearance run. If that profile repeats, you want to be on him for the reappearance itself.
William Knight has one from eight over the past fortnight, nothing spectacular, but Oisin Murphy takes the ride and that is an upgrade worth noting. The 9/2 available with Bet365 and Coral is workable each-way money in a 9-runner field.
Keep an eye on Rosario at 5/1 with William Hill. Roger Teal's yard is in decent nick at 2 from 8, and Rosario's Portland third last September off a similar mark shows the ability is undimmed. Worth a small saver each-way.
4:45 Betway Bet The Responsible Way Handicap (1m)
Selection: Great Chieftain (11/4, Coral)
This is the race of the day and Great Chieftain stands out on multiple levels. He is a course-and-distance winner, currently back down to his last winning handicap mark, and the Cambridgeshire run here last autumn showed genuine class when he finished second-best on his side in a field of 23. The Meydan campaign did not go smoothly on debut in January, but a solid fifth of 16 over this exact trip at the same track a fortnight later showed the ability had not deserted him.
William Buick rides, Oliver Cole's yard is quietly ticking, and this 5-year-old returns to conditions that suit him perfectly on good ground at Newmarket over a mile. The 11/4 with Coral or 3/1 with Bet365 is the standout price in this race. Back him to win in a 10-runner handicap at those odds.
Mister Winston at 4/1 is the obvious threat. Andrew Balding has been in strong form (7 from 35), Oisin Murphy aboard, and the gelding operation may have done him the world of good. A 10lb rise last season showed the assessor respected him, and he remains unexposed at this level after just two handicap starts. The each-way case at 4/1 is genuine given the Balding yard's current form.
Arisaig at 10/1 is interesting for the more adventurous. A Goodwood Group 2 third last August (1m, good to firm) shows the ability on fast ground, and Jamie Spencer does not take rides on mares going nowhere. Career-high mark is a concern but she is a talented animal who deserves respect.
Today's NAP
Odds: 3/1 โ Bet365 (others: 11/4 Coral, 4.0 Betfair Exchange)
Course-and-distance winner back on his last winning handicap mark, with William Buick booked and a Cambridgeshire run last autumn that confirmed he handles this track at this trip as well as any horse in the field. The Meydan form reads better than the bare result suggests, and good Newmarket ground is exactly what this horse wants. In a 10-runner handicap at 3/1, this is the value play of the day.
