📅 15 April 2026 Horse Racing

Newmarket, Wednesday 15 April 2026 — Tips & Preview

The Rowley Mile fires up properly today with three Pattern and Listed races to sink your teeth into. Good ground conditions suit horses with a turn of foot, and with Charlie Appleby's yard running at a blistering 7/14 over the last fortnight, anything carrying blue colours deserves serious respect. Ryan Moore picks up rides across the card too, and his book is always worth following at a venue like this.

2:25 — Betway Feilden Stakes (Listed, 1m1f)

Selection: Poseidon's Warrior (William Buick) — 5/2 Bet365/Coral

This is the standout bet of the day. Appleby's yard is in the form of its life right now, and Poseidon's Warrior ticks every box for this assignment. A 900,000-euro Sea The Stars colt who has done nothing but improve, he was beaten narrowly at Haydock before drawing clear by five lengths at Goodwood over this exact trip on good ground. That kind of winning margin in a conditions race is not something you see every day, and the manner of it screamed "more to come." Buick sticks with him, Appleby is firing, and the step up in grade looks very manageable against a field where the form of several others carries question marks.

Isaac Newton is the obvious danger at around 7/2 with William Hill. The Ballydoyle colt has Group 1 experience through the Criterium de Saint-Cloud and Ryan Moore rides, but he was beaten at Goodwood before his French campaign and has questions to answer returning to domestic action. Wareeth is unbeaten in one start but that single outing gives us very little to go on at these odds.

Poseidon's Warrior at 5/2 on good ground, with the most in-form trainer-jockey combination in British racing behind him. This is a confident selection.

3:00 — Betway Earl Of Sefton Stakes (Group 3, 1m1f)

Selection: Skukuza Each-Way (Ryan Moore) — 6/1 Bet Victor/talkSPORT BET

A genuinely competitive renewal and the 6/1 about Skukuza looks like the value angle in a race where Damysus and Boiling Point are likely to dominate the market. Ed Dunlop's five-year-old has been knocking on the door at the highest level all season. He was unlucky at York in a Group 3 last August on good to firm, finished with good efforts in Group 2s at Leopardstown and Longchamp, and came back from a winter break with a close fifth at Saint-Cloud only 17 days ago. That run reads like a horse ready to peak, and Moore reclaims the saddle after riding him to that near-miss at York.

The concern with Damysus is the 3lb penalty he carries, and while his Gosden yard is ticking along, his RPR of 123 is lower than several rivals here. Boiling Point is a proven C&D performer, his Cambridgeshire win over this exact track last autumn was brilliant, but the Winter Derby run at Lingfield over 1m2f looked laboured and there are fitness and trip questions. Persica won this race last year under Ryan Moore, but Moore has switched to Skukuza, which tells its own story. At 6/1 each-way in a six-runner Group 3, the place terms are tight, but the win case is strong enough to keep Skukuza as a win-and-place proposition rather than just a consolation bet.

3:35 — Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (Group 3, Fillies, 7f)

Selection: America Queen (Rossa Ryan) — 6/1 Bet365/William Hill

Thirteen runners in the Nell Gwyn and the market is wide open, which is exactly how this race usually shapes up. Act Of Kindness holds obvious appeal as the Appleby representative with Buick in the saddle, and her two runs read promisingly, but an RPR of 98 is modest for Group 3 company and she is essentially untested at this level.

America Queen at 6/1 represents the value play. Richard Hughes's filly ran a sequence of 1-2-4 last season, with the form around her including credible opposition. Her RPR of 115 and TS of 108 both lead the market and suggest she brings the strongest bare figures to the race. Rossa Ryan keeps the ride, the Hughes yard has been ticking over, and good ground is exactly what you want for a filly likely to travel strongly in the first half of the race.

Beautify at 9/2 with AP O'Brien is interesting, Ryan Moore takes the ride, and an RPR of 119 is the highest in the field. The form reads 3-1-2-8, that last run being the concern, but O'Brien's fillies often come alive in the spring and Moore's booking is a strong signal. If you are playing each-way, Beautify at 9/2 is worth splitting stakes with America Queen at 6/1 given the four-place terms on offer.

Asmeralda is a wildcard worth noting. A 640,000-euro Night Of Thunder filly from the Gosden yard, she won her sole start at Kempton over 7f, and the stable has landed this race six times. One run is not much to go on, but at 17/2 she is on the shortlist for each-way punters who want a longer price in a big field.

Today's NAP

Poseidon's Warrior — Betway Feilden Stakes (2:25 Newmarket)
Odds: 5/2 — Bet365 (others: 5/2 Coral, 3.9 Betfair Exchange)

The most dangerous combination in British racing right now, Appleby and Buick, lining up with a physically imposing Sea The Stars colt who has already shown he can win by five lengths at this exact trip on good ground. He was bought for 900,000 euros and has done everything asked of him in two starts. Good going at Newmarket plays right into his hands, the opposition has questions to answer, and the 5/2 is a price that should be taken before the morning market moves. The NAP of the day, no hesitation.
